Foreign characters

Postby Thomcat » Tue Mar 07, 2006 9:29 pm

There is another problem - foreign characters and transliteration.

I only speak from Russian experience here, but not all browsers are set to show unicode charsets (meaning some Cantr players see non-alphabetic gibberish).

The alternative is transliteration, but there is no standard here that I know of. (Even though 'Vui' and 'Vwee' are the same, an English speaker is going to see them differently).

Finally, what language does your Cantrian speak? With so many english speaking characters showing up on the Russian island, for example, how do you role-play the difference? Fortunately (so far) all gestures have been in english (e.g. *he nods*), but imagine if the gestures were in Russian, Polish, etc?

*sigh*

Not true! You could say things about my mother and i wouldn't have a clue! And it's interesting pasting it in Intertran to see if the site can actually get the translation correct (which 99 times out of 100 it can't).

So a technical question that I have been wondering for a while...what character encodings is the Cantr site using for the Polish area? I think about 1 in 3 Polish characters are posting in gibberish characters on my screen. I have about every encoding enabled on my computer that I can, but haven't found the right one yet, apparently. :?

Oh, and I always try to gesture in the language my character is playing in. My English emote in English, Germans in German, etc. I hate it when people fall back to English.

I understand a little bit, it's something like:
Bring out the champagne and celebrate
(with the help of an online tanslator)

Oh, so that's why the noun was not declined. Ask a native speaker, don't base your conclusions on what I understand from the translation - I don't speak Polish.

Not a bad idea, but... gestures are visual things. The eyes know no language.

Maybe we should totally swamp the programmmers and ask for "gesture buttons" - results in native language, of course. ;)

Seriously, though, on the Russian island there are both english and russian speakers. Gestures in only one language don't make RP sense.

It's been said twice now, so I have to ask. What exactly is the problem with using the one language that "all" of us (with few exceptions, I'd wager) know, for things that aren't language dependent in the game world anyway.
I mean, the Swedes and Turks share an island (that's common knowledge), and the emotes are done in English. Are you seriously saying that I should learn turkish to play there? (Or teach swedish to the Turks?)
