Perhaps it would be better to change it so cars could not travel on sand roads, but only on Paved roads, highways and expressways rather than fuel?
The way oil gets its value... and it allows, maybe even encourages, advancement, in the form of better roads?
Always thought it was stanger that the sand roads could support all vehicles, when there are three higher level of improvement, than the vehicles needed no fuel...

Since none of my characters have motorized vehicles, I'm ready to bully the ones who do.
Cantr shouldn't have that level of technology anyway, if we can turn them into ghosts of the past, and how soon you can see abbandoned cars standing on town squares and children climbing on top of them, wondering what kind of a horse was fit to pull that thing... They could turn into legends like the times when you could get steel straight from the ground. Mmm, coal engines, dung engines, that would be far more logical than these unnatural super engines we have now. And emptying the gas tank when you go in would be a good way of keeping newspawns from stealing your van.

Now that I think about it more I guess I wouldn't mind if there was fuel. Like somebody else said it would create more jobs and more powerful people besides the people who have all the iron. Cars will still be for businesses and the average person will use boats or bicycles, so it's not like things will be all trhat drastically different then they are now.

The only way ..... the only way that I would ever say fuel is worth while would be if Cars could go between any town within one "tick" (I don't know what to call the three hour slots)

Yeah but with a car distance isn't really noticable, think about it by foot you get there in what, five days? thats's about 40 ticks, and you are travelling at about 2-3 mph, in a car you can travell at 60-80 mph, I don't know even more perhaps, it's not like there is speed restrictions in cantr, and so you are going about 40x the speed so you should get there in a 40th of the time, 1 tick.... it makes perfect sense

fair enough, but right now cars arn't useful enough for the price compared to bikes, and it is stupid saying that this isn't realistic, it's cantr realistic when what we are trying to decide here is whether we should make the game more real or not, and you are saying we should.
I say if you want distinctions between cars and you want to bring in fuel then it could be three things
1. amount of people allowed in it
2. weight it can carry
3. Fuel tank size and economy (ie how much fuel it burns off per journey)

Shouldn't the introduction of fuel actually make cars more usable?
Currently the main reason that is given for the under-use of cars is that they're extremely valuable and, while characters wealthy enough to build them can't really afford to travel themselves, they can't afford to trust others with them either.
Now, if cars are made cheaper to manufacture but at the same time require something (preferrably) hard to get to keep running it should be a lot easier to actually use them. The owner doesn't have to be all that much afraid of an underling stealing an item he lacks the means to use without support after all.

What he said! And I agree with others that oil should be more of a sought after resource in cantr!

Well, Xanth is sitting on the oil on one of the islands but, knowing RD, they'll make ethanol easier to manufacture and more efficient to use, and then you'll see that it can only be made from a precise mixture of vegetables found only in Seatown Garden....
