Maily Yumm in the Ranger's Tale wrote:He was executed swiftly, the final proof of his questionable activities culminating in a ‘shit-list’ of important Regional figures he was planning to hit off. We were a hundred percent, and then some, behind the set course of Maily, "I’ll probably die for killing Maynard. There is almost no way in hell that I will not die for it. It’s worth it to me though, and I’ll never fucking regret it. Some things are worth more than power, and some things are worth more than living. The heroes of the past didn’t know that some things were left unfinished. They did their part, and they paid dearly for it. It’s sad to me that so many people don’t even know how much people standing right next to them did."

My character has no issue with quoting somebody else who said the word.

One of my characters has been known to curse a time or two. But its all personality, and not excessive. I think the last time she cursed was about 2 years ago (IC). But, it gets her point across. Which is needed at times, since, some people think that women are not very good soldiers. (I hate that guy.)

Well, I don't like swearing at all. But since its not like that in real life, its not like that in Cantr. (Real life is much worse though because there are a lot more people, and humans have been on this world for a while now)

I don't like it either, and, more importantly, I find it jars me out of my immersion in the game more often than not. That Ranger Tale example above being a prime example.

I disagree.

None of us is all too surprised when a char hits yours with a sword, drags him into a building, locks him up, starves him,.... We allow plenty of antisocial, even sick behaviour.

In these situations profanity is entirely appropriate.

There's nothing wrong with profanity per se, but what is profane in Cantr???

Nitefyre's example seems anachronistic (although that word isn't entirely right). Shitty and f word is part of a sentences that sounds so 20C America, more like Philip Marlow than a ranger... Not that I've read it in context!

You wouldn't hear medievel knights say shitty, or Chixago cops say forsooth, so cantarians need their own slang and swearwords, to develop their own language!

I don't like to see profanity, especially in-game. It doesn't matter if it's quoted or said, it just doesn't seem like it belongs. It's not that I'm particularly offended by it, but profanity should be used only on the rare occasion where it is fitting. Otherwise it is just ineffective, might offend someone, or it makes you look like an idiot.

A Cantreality jargon would be a wonderful idea.
I have one character who has started to say "ehck" as a not-so-vulger profanity, (being a bastardized typo of Heck).
Her reasoning when someone asked why she kept saying that was it was a word which sounded like how she felt about the topic in question.
"Someone just stole the needle I was going to use to make some clothes? Well Ehck and Sleepy-Ehck, that is terrible" (actual quote)
Sleepy-Ehck is of course the stronger use of the term. It fits IC.

Or am I just getting too carried away with the whole "Cantreality"? (I positively adore that word!)

That's what I was getting at. RL curses don't fit. If you can come up Cantrian curses, (and you can surely blasphemy the god(s) in your region,) fair enough.

bleep  And I agree, using swear words from real life doesn't fit Cantr reality. (And ehck is all you could come up with? It is still related to a RL swear word) Though my characters don't need swear words, but I certainly don't like other people saying them.

Lots of words from real life don't fit Cantr reality...if you cut out the swear words wouldn't you have to cut out all the others too? I mean, if you want to get really technical about it you can't even *give someone an icy look* because there is no ice.

Ahh! but there's ice cream! So I guess it must be an *ice creamy look*... but that sounds sweet instead of glaring and cold.

An icy look is a kind of look, and you are calling it icy OOC. Your character doesn't say the words inside the asterisks. So that ought to be fine.

Now, whether someone else could describe it as an icy look in character is a more interesting question. I would say that icy used in that manner would be part of the language independant of actual ice...

I think the whole point of this, outside the "vulger language" is one of perception.

I've noticed some people play their characters as if everything is only in-game, and they are rather forceful about it. They never, EVER mention objects or concepts that exist in the real world, and someone building a project they have not seen in this location is met with surprised curiosity about "What's that sharp pointy thing? A knife you call it, what's it used for?"

Others, have described holding hands, splashing in the water to swim, hair cascading about, and generally acting as if Cantrians are human, with human physical features, and emotions. If one of these characters arrived where one of my first two characters spawned, there would be a flurry of "You see [everyone else in town] talking to Joe Newspawn" to let them know that such strange behavior is inappropriate for this game.

To me, that's taking IG -vs- OOC division a bit too seriously. I mean I was encouraged that the manufacture list represented "common knowledge" in CANTR. There is a certain level of common sense to translate "True Cantr" into something us human players can comprehend, and certain assumptions just HAVE to be made, lest we all sit there quietly not knowing if we can even emote pointing with our hands. The game just shows we point, who's to say we don't point with purple tentacles, or Squigglyspooges?!

Likewise, even speaking English is perhaps, by extension, a completely OOC interference. Who's to say that CANTRians do not speak in $#SDG456r, or use pheramones to convey words, or are like fireflies and use something ankin to morse code as their native language? Granted, this leap is a bit too large, but I feel using words like "An icy stare" are a given. They may not be entirely InGame, but as stated, these are more to give the player reading the words a better sense of the situation so they can react in character.
Otherwise, we would all be reduced to saying things like "The two stood in a manner condusive to the co-positioning of their respective mandibles enableing the area of dermus covering macular enamel to exert a temporary force against each other." You know, a frickin KISS.
And while the above example also breaks this point about OOC info (do Cantrians have lips or teeth?!?!!, it's not coded, OH NOES!), it illustrates what I noticed has happened in-game when I tried to learn the rules and setting.
No offense intended for those fully in-game players, I can appreciate that level of immersion is fun too, but don't be all pissy about the details.

Long story short, it seems everyone has an opinion on this type of topic, and surprise surpsie, they don't all equate. The truth is we will never all agree totally on the "correct" answer. But at least the discussion of the answer will guide those who even read the forums towards a mutual understanding and perhaps temper any hostility if a mis-used RL word sneaks into a conversation by some at times.

Sleepy-ehck indeed!

Nateflory, you got a great point there.
Though, if we do take it that far, then even your description with the mandibles and stuff would be incorrect, as it still uses a language spoken in the real world.
And folks in the other language areas would wonder if that long blurry of letters was a message to a hostile force, an insult, a story or whatever else.
And now I forget what else I was trying to say  - I guess for some folks memory is the first thing to go.
Oh well...
