Vulgarities of Speech

Postby herkamer » Sun Mar 05, 2006 9:52 pm

Can a character curse freely without a player fearing reprisals from Cantr management?

Within reason. If the character has an IC reason for it, it's usually fine - of course, it still can't be taken too far, but as long as it's not too frequent or too insulting (hate speech, overly suggestive, etc.) it should not be a problem with PD.

I wouldn't recommend it, a lot of people are offended by cursing. And even if a character doesn't swear as a habit, even having something dodgy in it's name can get you into trouble.

It is certainly in character, and that is why I am struggling with his foul mouth. I cringe at the things I feel he needs to say. I would like to censor him, but I feel that to do so would be to burden his actions with OOC motivation. Though it is by no means over the line, it toes it on occasion. *sighs* I will stay the course with him, until such time PD does intervene. I will gladly be rid of him as he is a nasty @#$*.

I don't see why the PD would interfere, I mean our character are allowed to murder people in cold blood, but they can't swear and use bad language? Even if with my example it would probably be the victims that are doing most of the swearing.

I think it's alright to say ass and shit. (I hate the so called political correctness.) Some other things might be better fit in private.

Anything is allowed to be said as long as it is in character. You should note that most racial and ethnic and even religious offenses can't be applied in game (somewhat yet) because they do not exist so that will throw up red flags. But saying any curse word is perfectly allowed once again as long as it is in character. The Player's Department cannot punish a player for playing their character through the mindset of the character. So if the character is going to swear in that given situation then the character should swear.

Anything is allowed as long as it is in the personality of the character. It is when you go out of character is when you will get into trouble.

As well, consider the fact that those words don't have the same origins and histories in Cantr as they do in real life. There shouldn't actually be that stigma in game attached to them, or at least stigma that stems from the outside world. In game situations could certainly foster that stigma.

Anyway, you can say any word in the same tone and situations as some of those words are used, and then they become just as bad as saying the words. Well, basically they are, but people don't necessarily look at it that way. "Fudge that!" will never be considered saying something bad as saying the alternative, I guess, though, essentially, I think it's the tone and reasons a word is used that make it used badly or not. Words are words, not really bad or good until given that implication and even then they're not good or bad but badly used. Even I cringe at a "bad" word or two depending on the situation, so whatever. The logic won't make the reactions to words change, no matter the situation they're used in.

When it comes to vulgarity, be considerate of other players. I have no problem with an occasional curse to emphasize something when emotions of whatever sort are running high. But if Cantr degrades down to the level of speech that I heard through high school I would probably stop playing. The F-word is not an appropriate adjective for mountain dew, and it doesn't make any sense for potatoes either.

I've walked out on great movies before because of excessive profanity, and, although I love this game, I would do the same if swearing ever becomes really commonplace in it.

This has always confused me...

You can't say F@ck, because cantarians can't (although they seem to RP it quite well ;-))

You can't blaspheme (unless you count taking the name of Jos / the changers in vain) or use damn, damnation, hell becausde that is OOC,

I spose various anatomical references *could* be swearing by in but as Hermi said in a community where are number of people are naked at any given time the offensiveness of the words, and therefore their use as swearing is goin to depend on local standards.

I think profanity in cantr, like in life, generally shows a lack of imagination, which is why I swear so much in real life.... You could be so much more offernsive using unnecessary words...

In the Swedish/Turkish and the Spanish/German area i don't think they agree with you. On the verge of 'ethnic cleansing' now and then. :)

Well along those lines of thought... then it's prefectly fine to say crap and sh!t because even though canterians don't defecate, the animals sure do. And I'm seeing more and more piles of the stuff lying about for unwary canteriens to stumble over.

But it's not even common for the Cantr animals , they only defecate once in their lives , at the point of death.

Sorry here... but i think you do need the odd strong word to go along with certain Characters.
I have a Male character who i kind of based on a mixture from two plumbers who i had working at the time in the house.
And if any of you dont know what and English Plumber looks like, it would be.
A well earned beer belly and a real need for a shave, with maybe last nights curry.. you think dripped down his vest, a view of the moon when they bend to look at your pipes with a pair of jeans just about dangling mid groin. With the joking finesse of Roy Chubby Brown or Kevin Bloody Wilson..(thats an act name not me swearing).
So he scratches his arse, picks his nose. Swears like a trooper, (my only char that does)
Tells really bad jokes, like why do women have smaller feet?...To stand next to the oven to cook easier.
Often heard saying Crap , Bugger, Sod it and the odd stronger ones while thief chasing.
But he's nearly in his forties. And he's grown grumpier with age but still get's hit on by the ladies more times then he can count carrots. Pfft..i mean who couldn't resist that charm.

So while i too wouldn't like to see all start swearing all over Cantr.
Playing the opposite sex is a whole new world, but he's the male one i've had the most fun with and it was just a great time learning to be a lad. Not saying all men swear at all just like there are foul mouth women out there.
But it wouldn't have been the same without that free use of dodgy language which just fitted with his ways of character.

If it was swearing ooc then no way...then thats personal.

But a bit of character drama with the odd swearing at a delicate or tense moment happens and to be honest we can all read over the bad words. I've heard 5 year old kids say worse. and the odd newbie with the famous wtf!!!.How to i Play here lmao and ..then can someone pass me some sodding steel lines..etc.will continue to happen whatever.
So if i get to see a gripping rp scene with the odd obsenity then i take the rude with the entertainment value and it kind of makes it more real. In Real life people don't argue politely. Cantrians arn't so different they make and break friends just like we all do only faster. And i don't personally think.. Oh My what a foul mouthed player..
And some words perfectly innocent in some countries mean something different others
Like eg.* Gives her a jokingly soft pat on the fanny* Sorry, but when your bending down to get carrots like that your backside a perfect target.

Now the word fanny doesn't mean backside in England. It would mean the ladies genitalia.
So swear words are the odd thing to judge when they have different values for other countries.
I think if we all just stay away from the F***ing Fswear words and the ones in those league, that should be a medium to keep the peace amongst all here offended by such words.
Take the (Bastard Sword). Just another example of jusssst a word.
No one can make you feel inferior without your consent and Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect. It means you have decided to look beyond the imperfections.
