New diseases (brainstorming for options & effects)
Suggestions for basic diseases:
- diarrhea (diarrhea, hunger)
- bloody diarrhea (diarrhea, hunger, physical damage)
- stomach sickness (vomiting, maybe diarrhea)
- food poisoning (vomiting, maybe diarrhea)
- plague (boils, physical damage, massive tiredness)
- warts and boils, pox
- lung diseases (whooping cough, respiratory plague, ordinary cold)
My thought is that the effects should be shared by several diseases - due to this we might not know which of the diseases a character has. If they get a boil, you couldn't know if that's a blooming pox/plague or just a random case of bad hygiene. If they vomit, you can't know if it's a food poisoning or something infectuous.
Effects:
Diarrhea - your character's bowel movements are only visible for yourself but if the character is indoors, they would randomly run outside (provided that the door is open or they have the key) to relieve themself. And that naturally interrupts the project they're working on.
If the character is locked inside, they would unfortunately have to do it on the floor, upon which everyone entering would get a message "You enter Town Jail, leaving the central area of Citilandia. It smells of $h!t in here." Or "you smell the scent of feces". There are several options but I think you catch the drift. Feel free to make suggestions.
If the character is wearing pants, loincloth, skirt or anything covering the pelvic region, that article of clothing might get soiled though most of the time it's assumed that the character can get their pants down in time. However this would require adding a dirtiness attribute to clothes.
Vomiting - First of all, it would show up in the events as "You see X vomiting". If inside, there would be the running outside effect the same as with diarrhea (though sometimes they wouldn't get out in time). When someone has puked on the floor, it would also appear as a smell to everyone entering. "It smells of vomit in here."
Maybe when you vomit, you would gain hunger, or the other option is that when you have the stomach sickness/food poisoning, on feeding hour you would get the message "You are too sick to eat", and this way gain hunger.
Vomiting and diarrhea would naturally require cleaning the floor... the tool would be a rag, or possibly just 100 g of hemp/cotton/wool cloth. Maybe there would be an object called a blotch of vomit, or a pile/blotch of feces, and it would have a button called "clean up". (The button could have a picture of a blotch.) Actually, I'm beginning to like that thought, it would create more work if there are several instances. The other option would be having a "mop the floor" option on the location page, but this would better fit in with the old things.
Boils - Would be visible in the character description, and might be coverable by clothing. The problem is deciding which piece of clothing covers what - for example in shirts category there are long sleeves and short sheeles and no sleeves at all, and skirts can have hems from half thigh to the ankle. Boils alone are only a dent to the character's beauty, but could be a sign of pox or plague.
Tiredness - Now that's the basic effect of different sicknesses. Could be added to almost all of them, sometimes in a bigger role, sometimes smaller.
Coughing - Kind of like sneezing, shows up in the events, and when it happens, the people in the same room would sort of throw a roll for resistance. Or if outside, the ones likely to get infected would be those who have whispered to or been whispered by the coughing person (because they're likely to be close by).
Physical damage - This would be the effect of anything that includes deterioration of body tissues and/or bleeding.

I like the ideas of more diseases to be implemented. It would go a long step into making the game more realistic.
The only thing is, we would need something to cure it. Make normal healing food in the right amounts be able to heal you?
Coz stuff like the seemingly uncurable "sneezes" are rather frustrating. All you can do is isolate yourself from other people and wait.

I don't like the idea of smelling like shit or vomit. Or having to clean it up. That is too realistic. This is a game, not real life and charries are not pets or kids that you have to clean up after.
In my opinion, this is just another thing to waste your charrie's time by getting rid of the feces or vomit. The illness itself is fine, but I don't want the byproducts of the illness. And they need to have a cure BEFORE they are implemented.
[edit] With the resources for the cure made widely available by RD before implementation, too

Heh. Very colorful. I am with AngelSpice on the effects, though.
I like the sneezes, because while they have a noticeable effect on the character, they aren't completely crippling. Diarrhea and vomiting are cool ideas, but I think it would be a bit much to code all of the cleanup.
I like the idea of diahrrea ( how to politely say "you see a man in his twenties shit his pants" ) I am not sure how like the messages of odor in the air or the automatically botting outdoors.
I guess I am thinking in terms of possible symptoms.
Sneezing, coughing, vomiting, sweating (fever), fainting?
I like the idea of overlapping symptoms. I would hate to see the effects so severe that they cripple, though. If a disease does that, it will need to be much harder to contract than the sneezes are. If diahrrea passes like the sneezes, Lake Village will be flooded with crap. Oh wait....too late.

Ok, i have to say that i like this idea, but i would like to revis it a bit.
all of your diarea and stomic problems should be linked with one desias, infection of the digestif tract, witch can be coused by several things, if a food sourse in a town gets infected(1%-30% posibility, depending on how much that sertain food is collected) or if food on the ground or in your invintory gets infected(just set the normal rates for food rotting in on this, and there you go, food that rots. But, make it like a 40% or somthing persent chance of seing that the food is rotting, but you can always smell rotting food if there is some on the ground or in your inventory, so USE YOUR NOSE!!! and ASK PEOPLE WHAT THEY SMELL!!!
as for symptoms, i have no problem with them, just giving my two scents on how you could obtain them.
Ok, how to prevent them, i would say the easyis would be to stop eating infected food for, bout, 5 days, to 10 days, and if you eat citric food probably( and of course, if you mix more than one citrice food together, it would increas the ability of this way to stop it)and drinking water should help.
Ok, as for boials, i have a few rekemendations. For this, i say there should be a few catigorys of symtoms before you would get this. Symtoms of perhaps coughing, itching yourself, or somthing like that, and a few days later, you get a horrible ITCHING BOIL!! and, having boils should be seen on the carracter list(the list of caracter list) thingy. Ok, and also, having boils should decreas the helth of a carricter.
there should be a few ways of contracting boils.#1, this one should be by just chance, maby you get a rash becous you are so sweaty or somthing, and then it continues until it is a boil. the probability of contracting the rash this way should be 20%, and a 10% CHance of the desias continuing into a boil if it isn't treatid.#2nd way of contracting this deseas should be with sleaping in a cot that has been used by somone with this deseas, or wearing cloths, using same tools, all of course witch would become imposible over a 2 day period of that person using those objects.50% chance of contracting rash, and 20% chance of contracting boil.#3way would be direct interaction with caricter who has contracted boil or rash. Direct interaction would be hitting him without using weapon, or participating in the same project as him. there should be a 70%chance of aquiering a rahs,40% of a boil.#4 should be just being around that person. there should be a 25% chance of aquiering a rash,5% chance of the rash continuing into a boil, if it is cought this way.
Symtomes should be itching of the rash and of the boil, and of course being able to see that somone has a rash or boil, and how large that rash or boil is. Also, once the desias has reached boil stage, the victem should take some damage, untill of course
Cures for this should be the rubbing of alcohol(once its implumented), perhaps rubbing of whater(a bath
Ok, as for coughing, the wooping cough and the such, all of them should jsut be progretions of the sneazing sicness, witch would be coused by, well, however the sneazing sicness is coused, that should be it.
Ok, as an added note, if somone was to get a desias by more than one way, than that person should have bothe persintages of the desieas continuing added together and that would be the final result.
theres my long, boarding... maby exiting for some of you nerds

Worst disease/illness ever..... Palsy. (ie: The Shakes)
Instead of sneezing, you have a chance to randomly drop a few grams of whatever resoruce you carry the most of?
You see a man in his thirties shart shaking and drop 29 grams of sand.
Its a thought...and one slightly less violent than the gastrointestinal ones listed above. And it would not be transmittable, and only affect those who are weakened by tiredness or damage?
Or else something like
Just brainstorming possibilities...

This is a game, not real life. You won't smell anything, you will only read the information.
I like this idea a lot!
There can be/should be many different diseases cousing simillar effects - one will couse only vomiting, other sneezing and coughing, and another vomithing and diarrhea. Try to find a cure for everything.

Nateflory: That's a good one - and one that Cantrians would really worry about instead of just ignoring them, like sneezes. Imagine if your hands started shaking with age and you might even drop keys and stuff, and everybody would be watching after the old town leader, picking up dropped items and stuffing them back into their inventory, only to be repeated again soon.
One thing came to mind: fainting. I know I've suggested it elsewhere but it might use some editing. First of all, it would last a relatively short time, and might even go away if the player checks the character. But when someone faints, it shows up on the events screen and it might say (unconscious) after the name on the People list or another chance is that it says so in the character description. There would be about a five minute period where the person's inventory would be vulnerable to sticky fingers and they could be dragged more easily, ignoring the strenght attribute.
And Rusalka: Indeed. Your imagination is your limit. And wouldn't there be more incentive to clean up if things had smells? It could be extended to corpses too, that would encourage people to mummify them or bury them, or avoid being in the same room with them. The same thing with blotches of vomit and diarrhea. I bet the town jail would be much more believable too if it was really messy and discusting.
Tv_remote: You know in real life there are also people who go pass for example HIV to someone for revenge, or out of sheer bitterness towards the world. But if the ways of spreading wouldn't be known to public, people couldn't be sure how the thing is spread and doing it intentionally would be harder.
I know it would be realistic that diseases should be contagious, but I can also see some a**holes running around with a whooping cough and whispering to everyone to try and spread it. You know there would always be a few people like that. Maybe not, maybe I'm just cynical.
Hehehe! I have a char doing this with the sneezes. Is this common?

More diseases are good, but I've got an idea...
Super Diseases. Bubonic Plague, causing physical damage and, if roleplayed right, psychosis! Though obviously that would be roleplayed. It wouldn't affect tiredness.
AIDS, causing you to go up to 99 damage, bit by bit, so that a bruise from being punched could kill you.
These would appear at a random location every 1,000 days or so.

well I think super diseases are stupid unless you can get rid of them, and if you can 1000 days is too much (we have only had 1400ish days in all of cantr) because that is 3 years real time. I say if you can cure them they should pop up every 200 days or so

Ehem....
Tv_remote... Actually, you would probbably find someboddy being hierd by someone to do that, such as, if blackrock, or someone els tryed to attack a town, sick people would go in first, and infect everyone so that they are easy to take over. MUAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!

I'm going to throw my lot in with AngelSpice.
Her point isn't about reading and being disgusted by the messages... It's about the fact that it will be just one more mechanical thing that has to be fought in order for your chars to survive. It's about the fact that, whether it's text or not, who wants to deal with a char that's got chronic diahrrea that they can't get to go away?
I'm okay with some more illnesses.. much along the lines of the sneezing sickness, but I don't think there should be too many or too involved. I'd rather rp that my char is not feeling well, not watch a msg pop up saying, "You vomit violently." or "You see a woman in her twenties vomiting violently."
Plus it's just something else to needlessly light up a char and make you think, "Oh! Something's happened..." *checks that char* "Oh wait, it's just Suzy Q vomiting again."
Again, if you make things too realistic, too encumbersome and too reliant on mechanics, then people will get tired of struggling too much and get bored and leave. Some measure of struggle provided by mechanics is indeed a good thing.. but in moderation. It is after all, a game.

Yes, but in a game, you are SUPPOSED to have struggles and things. If you don't, it would just get boaring. Cantr, right now... It has struggles. But you are struggling against other players. With desiasis, it will make it harder in the game... sure.. but it will also add another challange, so that people who HATE each other, can come together and FIGHT!!! Either that, or they die. Or, they have alredy come together and they don't need this.
But one thing that I want to happen, is that I want this to be preventable.Like, I want to be able to see that food is rotten, and that I just have to look at it first. Like, if a diseas was unpreventable, and it was BIG, then In cantr, alot of caricters would die. And most of those caricters would be in the arias with lots of people, and the like, and when somone dies, than there will just be another newspawn to pop right back in, and like that, so... the diseas would never really stop.
But what i am getting at, is, JUST MAKE SURE THAT THE DISEAS IS CURIBAL BEFORE IMPLUMENTING IT!!!
