Aimless Wandering

Postby BarbaricAvatar » Sat Mar 04, 2006 11:25 am

Does anyone else have the problem that some of their charries aren't actually amounting to anything and never are going to amount to anything? They just travel from town to town gathering a bit of food here, a resource there but have no specific purpose in life. They appear like they're trying to find something or get somewhere but they never do.
Is this a common habit to get into?

Yes. The ones that do usually end up deleted or starved to death, but in some happy cases they find a reason to live. Every character needs goals and dreams to keep them going.

I did have the idea of making a boat with one of them, but when i saw the lengthy process you have to go through just to get a tiny bit of steel to make a hammer with i kinda gave up on the idea, and he like many others became an aimless wanderer.

All the newspawns I've created recently have turned into aimless wanderers. :( I want more interesting characters, since I only have 2 now that I actually play and they're both pretty quiet, but I always end up letting my newspawns die. . . .

Behold, the stone hammer!

Now, go, and find purpose again.

Does anyone ever even bother to make a steel hammer? Same with an iron needle, they seem pretty pointless.

Anyway, when my characters start wandering aimlessly it usually means they're going to die soon because they're boring and I don't have time to deal with them anymore. I haven't had to do this in awhile though, since I trimmed my account down to only the interesting chars.

My characters who are/were wandering aimlessly with little personality are the ones I go out on a limb with when interesting situations arise. I'm pretty good at finding a limb that fits my chars wanderings too. One became an anarchist, another turned into my one and only nut.

It turns boring characters into more interesting ones that may or may not be killed sometime soon. That makes for some fun days from those former faceless wanderers.

Why do they need to have any kind of plan in life? I have two characters:

The first: he's no great leader, great warrior or great explorer, but he's decided to help organise his town, and has also been travelling around meeting people and trying to help them as much as he can. Now he's quite busy with tasks he's set himself, and longs for a quiet life back home.
My other character is in the Esperanto area, and is happy just to learn about his world and make clothes, though he may go exploring soon if he gets bored.

My philosophy (for my charries, at least) is 'just take life as it comes'. Explore, talk to people, set tasks for 'yourself'. It won't be like an action movie, but in Cantr, what is? :P Seriously, it's a society. Not everyone in a society has an 'interesting' life. On the other hand, life is what you make it.

Let the wandering become part of them.

All experiences affect you, and it should be the same for characters in Cantr. I have some chars that wouldn't be who they are today without some aimless wandering in their youth.

Some are still wandering, but I have plenty of characters that are currently interesting me to be content with the updates on those that aren't. Who knows what the future may hold? Love, power, an untimely death at the hand of somebody you've never met? Can never tell in Cantr, and that's the beauty of it. Just because they're wandering aimlessly now, anything could happen, at any time.

(Unless you're stuck up in Klojt mountains :P )

My characters start as wanderers or working for someone else, all are under 25 and all 8 have a purpose. They all have pretty good clothes except one. Three have iron shields, one has an iron spear and another has a battle axe. Another has his own mud hut. All legitimately.
I think being involved and persistance are the keys.
Yuk yuk yuk.

To bang my usual drum... These chars are your children, if you can't look after them, you shouldn't have them. You got to be committed like Creed.
