Sealed Envelopes and other signatures
Why not just make them a direct link to that character's dynamic name?
So when you seal an envelope, it says "sealed by a man in his twenties" or whatever you know him as. Sure, this would lead to some odd things like recognizing somebody based on them sealing an envelope. But this would be minimal and most importantly, this would solve the easily forged signature problem.

We've had real seals for quite a while. As far as I know, nobody has found all the resources needed, so I don't even know what exactly they do.
I think it would be overall a good thing to implement Nick's suggestion, even if it makes seals pointless. Whatever seals are good for, they're not solving the IG problem they were meant to solve.

I know where all of the resources for sealing wax are located on at least one island.
Unfortunately, as with a lot of "difficult" things to make/find you have to travel more than three locations to find them all. Too bad so many characters are just too lazy to put it all together. Guess the society simulator works in that respect.

Decreasingly less so, Sho. Several chars have all the requirements in inventory. I'll agree with you that their wisdom comes at a price, though. The related problem is the people they (the travellers/explorers with the results) are selling it to (the town/organization leaders) don't see it's value, though. Tough luck for Cantr major governments, I suppose.
PS - and this is NOT about sealing envelopes, but about authentification of notes in general.

We have all resources needed for seals and sealing wax in Polish Zone, and making what Nick propose would make seals pointless. Why not bug RD to add those resourcess to more places, or just try to found them? I propose possibility to seal envelope with wax, not just with char name like now it is.
If someone not noticed, that one of reasource needed for seal wax (bitumen) can be made from oil in gas purifer.

Or, more likely, no one will bother
The cost and bother of seals outweighs the benifits, as is the case with bronze and stone quarries. Three examples of good ideas added with far too much complexity / rarity of resources for the current in game situation to handle.
Sorry, but I really get annoyed when I see nice ideas added but with almost zero chance that anyone will ever get to make it or use it anytime soon.
It's unlikely that something requiring 'exotic' resources will encourage trade over land or over sea. More likely, no one will ever bother.

This is not our job.
And hopefully a lot more of these "exotic" snafus are being worked out. Changes are being discussed to existing protocols, new processes added (like the bitumen from oil implementation). Please just bear with us. We are trying to undo/finish a lot of mistakes and half-assed implementations that have occurred over the past while.
Most of the things added by RD are added because we as players are interested in them, so hopefully you can believe that we are not trying to shoot ourselves in the foot. We want to build this stuff too.
