Incinerator

Postby Ahoyhoy » Mon Feb 27, 2006 9:28 pm

No not for notes, that's a lost cause although it might be a good idea to have this work for notes too. But I was thinking you guys make possible the construction of incinerators. It's purpose would be to incinerate useless things you don't need such as bones and would require coal or gas to use.

I honestly don't see why people are so obsessed with eliminating "waste" notes and materials - trash envelopes and storage rooms (the stone buildings and extensions each hold well over a hundred times a character's inventory capacity, and the cottage and wood extension hold over fifty times) are really undervalued.

But that being said, I don't actually have an argument against this suggestion - I don't see a need, but if the players want it, let them have their safe, balance-safe toys. Not a major hassle for RD.

I particularly don't expect many characters to put significant work into eliminating their piles of low-value stuff - even if they don't want it, they aren't going to take the time to build a machine and run it to burn it up, particularly if they have to use valuable fuels to do it. Modern incinerators don't need fuel, even to burn water-rich household waste; we can stretch realism a bit to let Cantr incinerators be that efficient.

While I don't see much of a point either, maybe it would be used for burning corpses. But a shovel already buries bodies in one tick, so...

Eventually waste should affect the health of an area. So if you leave things laying around then diseases will more easily fester in that area which means that the chances of your character getting sick is more likely.

So ways to dispose of waste are good ideas. Right now there isn't much a point except to keep things looking nice and organized but eventually there should be a point or there could be severe consquences.

Implement both or none. Just the incinerator is pointless and just the waste consequences is evil and mean.

The Incinerator isn't pointless.....what happens when people have millions of grams of waste but nothing to do with it? What if they don't want to just leave it on the floor taking up space on the objects page.

Maybe there should be more resources converting possibilities. Like using bones and raw meat to make food for animals. Just an example anyway!

Yes, more things to make from bone and hide and all that is a possibility, but in reality, bones are useless so the Cantr staff would have a hard time doing that. Perhaps an incinerator isn't even needed, how about a waste hole....someone digs a hole in the ground using a shovel....puts resources in the hole....covers the hole...and the resources/objects disappear for good.

I like the idea of getting read of whatever you simply don't want, using fuel for it kind of defies the purpuse of it (not in the real world, but in Cantr)

I like the "animal food". There need to be more ways to interact with animals anways. Maybe by feeding them they turn less aggressive. Is there something like an "aggression index" of animals, or is it pure randomness?

Putting dung and raw foods into a composter could yield something worthwhile....perhaps when (or if) we implement gardens or the initiation of new crops to an area, compost could be useful.

Composter
500 grams wood

Would operate only outside, like the drying rack.

Hide and food could be useful in training hunting animals, like a tiger or a hawk. I've never seen a tiger, actually, but I assume they exist.

Probably not, actually. A semi-full list is here:

Plenty of other big cats, though...

The animal list is guaranteed to be complete for July 2005; any animals introduced since then may not be in the wiki.

A general risk posed by incineration/composting is sabotage. At the moment there are no effective ways to use machines to sabotage resource stockpiles, but if this gets implemented a newspawn would be able to take a heap of resources and dump them into the composter. Therefore it is important that no valuable resources be compostable - in particular, valuable foods.

Started working on this idea and it kind of stalled, waiting to see how dung was going to work out.
