Use length as a measurement of a resource rather than grams

Postby rklenseth » Thu Feb 23, 2006 11:12 am

As the title say and stemming from the copper suggestion, make certain things measure in a length rather a gram like yarn, string, wiring, logs, planks, etc... It makes more sense to have it this way rather than measuring such things in gram or individual objects.

Would that be easy to implement? Or not? I, personally, don't care that much, but it'd be a nice touch.

I already pointed out int the copper wire discussion that pretty much the only thing that would need to be done is change the unit of the given thing. Grams into centimeters for example. That would add one more variable to the whole game (since we don't wanna replace every gram-unit into centimeters, for example)

Of course it means work for the programmers, but nothing really "new" would need to be done.

It is not as simple as just adding an additional field to the database. This is a lot of work to implement for very little gain

The gram weight is integral to all movement and exchange of resources . building and vehicle capacities are calculated using this intrinsic quantitty

Item descriptions and observable events all would have to be changed

It will also raise issues of conversion rates, does 50cm of hemp string weigh the same as 50cm of silk string ?

As a footnote out of all the examples mentioned above only two are resources . Yarn and string. Logs, wire and planks are all currently objects which already have dimensions.

I hope this never gets implemented! It would be a pain to have to convert measurements every time I want to pick as much as I can carry of some material.

Well the idea was to simply assume 1 cm weighs 1 gramm. But then again, that is rather unrealistic and, from what our fellow programmer tells us, it's not as easy as it might have seemed to me. Gramms are fine I suppose.
