Seeing where other boats are going

Postby rklenseth » Wed Feb 22, 2006 10:44 am

As originally suggested by El_Skwidd

Boats: I think it would be useful if on a boat, you could see the general direction that other boats are travelling. If it's possible, a relative speed would be useful as well. Kinda like on the roads where you can see which chars are faster and slower than you, you could see the same thing for boats. This would be useful if you're trying to follow or sail with another boat.

Yeah, nice idea. How should that be displayed?

Perhaps if you could see a boat as a triangle where one point is longer then the others and that point would be the direction which the boat was moving.

We have too few pixels on our little maps right now to do that reasonably :)

Maybe when you get close to another ship an icon appears in the Location page and when you click on the icon it tells you what direction the boat is going in and estimates how fast it is going in that direction.

Why a button?

Wouldn't it be faster to just display the direction and if you're going faster or slower then it?

Currently it already displays the direction they are relative to your location and the name and type of vessel . Displaying the direction and relative speed they are travelling in makes that a very crowded page.

Putting it on another page makes more sense from a formatting issue and is similar to the people page - you only get full infomation including direction of travel and relative speed about a another character when you open that page.

I don't like this idea. If I see a ship on the horizon, I have to stare at it for a bit of time before I can see which direction it is going. This is even more true if it's heading toward or away from me. The current system is fine as-is. If you want to know where it's going, watch it over the course of several hours.

I think you could avoid that with proper page design, actually ...

But I do somewhat agree with Doug as well - it's a good point.

I disagree. You'll have to stare at it for a moment to see how fast it's moving but you can instantly see which direction it's going.
Anyway, I'm in favour of being abble to see it's direction and I have no opinion about being abble to see it's speed.

What about if you can only see where it's going if it gets close to you?
