The Server Crash / Database Error

Postby UloDeTero » Sun Feb 19, 2006 8:22 pm

Firstly, I'd like to formally agree with the 'PRAISE to ProgD' thread started by Phalynx. I'm sure we were all having withdrawals, and thanks to the hard work of all the guys behind the scenes we can get back to our regular fix!

That said, I can't help but wonder what caused the problem. I have no knowledge of programing, but maybe some simple explanation for us non-technical types?

But my main concern is: How do we deal with and explain such a thing in-game. Was it a Sleeping Plague that struck everyone at the same time and left as quickly as it arrived? Or was it just an unexplained anomaly that no one will ever be able to explain?

Chris Johnson said in the chat that it was because of the recent change in animals. This created masses of reports that eventually clogged the database. But a thing like this should be announced inside the game since many people don't read the forums, and even less go to the irc channel.

Seko is right that I said that but what she doesn't know is that Chris Johnson was by that stage speculating randomly as to possible causes :)

There are still some unanswered questions as to the cause

ProgD are going to review exactly what happend and will let people know when we fully understand the cause.

Heehee, thanks for providing us with a believable answer to prevent the massacre of the Polish who surely must be invading the server space!

Nope, only in a very indirect sense ... (worm -> more log entries -> running faster out of disk space -> disk full -> database crash)

Database has been moved to another partition and should be fine.

Surely as time in game basically paused there is no need for explanation, just behave as if things never stopped....

My charries distincly remember waking up and not being able to hear their voices, so something definately did happen. Just another good opportunity for role-play.

Since the problems, my daily minutes have renewed about 10 hours later than usual. Will it go back to its normal time?
