What's to be ashamed of? I can usually kick the guys' arses when we fence with yardsticks in history.

Pundits and observers dispute the relationship of the terms nerd and geek to one another. Some view the geek as a less technically skilled nerd. Some factions maintain that "nerds" have both technical skills and social competence, whereas geeks display technical skills while socially incompetent; others hold an exactly reversed view, with geek serving as the socially competent counterpart of the socially incompetent nerd, and call themselves geeks with pride (compare Geekcorps, an organization that sends people with technical skills to developing countries to assist in computer infrastructure development). Another view is that "geeks" lack both social competency and technical skills.

Some regional differences may exist in the use of the words nerd and geek. Some claim that on the North American west coast the population prefers the term geek to nerd, while the North American east coast prefers the word nerd to geek (see Ellen Spertus's page on The Sexiest Geek Alive). Others on the east coast dispute this, claiming that they have always found nerd used disparagingly and geek used in a positive light. In Britain, this latter view tends to apply — nerd has more offensive connotations than geek, which speakers of British English often use affectionately. Compare anorak.

Only to find it's just a cultural context thing.

You think that you're the cool version of a geek    Get real!!!

Broadsword, to be honest, but I'm not a professional and that's not even close to a fencing blade anyway, so don't listen to my humble opinion.

I'm a Sabrer myself. I don't like the Epee, its too much for me to actually experience pain on a thursday night after school... (says a Sabrer, nursing several horizontal bruises and the odd slash on his off hand... yes, i got hit on my off hand, laugh it up)

Foil and Sabre are my weapons of choice. Plus my club harbours some of the most violent people known to man, and its nice to actually be able to parry with a bar of metal as opposed to a flick of the wrist...

Yes, an epee can leave bruises when you get a good hit in, but not nearly as bad as a cut to the wrist from a sabre (especially since I don't have a sabre glove), or a wicked flick hit from a foil. A do enjoy fencing the other blades, but since I mostly rely on point control, timing, and my long arms, epee is the blade I have the most success with.

You know you're a nerd when you say things like.... Did you know that you need to apply 250g more pressure to bend an epee than a foil? (school projects are useful...)

I like the pain of a sabre, its more sharp and doesn't hang around as much as a dull stab in the toe from an epee *shudder* now Electric Epee.. .that is fun. Steam Epee is just boring...
