A bit of digging in source code and Google reveals that the popunders are probably coming from the traffic counter. Cantr uses Webstats4U, a free web statistics service formerly known as Nedstatbasic, which creates popups and popunders (see the company's explanation at http://www.webstats4u.com/service/#misc14).
It'd be awfully nice of the powers that be to switch to a service that doesn't put obtrusive advertising on the site. I don't know much about what's out there, but Google Analytics (http://www.google.com/analytics/) is a new thing that's got a good reputation by association, being from a company whose motto is "Don't be evil" and all.
For now, a good workaround is to bookmark the login page directly, bypassing the main page's popunders. I realize that people are told not to do this precisely because it messes up the traffic analysis and possibly ad revenue; only do this if the ads are a huge problem and making it difficult to play Cantr.

Today's pop-up from www.cantr.net:
A nice box warning that the 'registry hasn't been cleaned' and a link to a 'registry cleaner' piece of software, that, surprise surprise, is a known piece of spyware.
That's such an old ploy that no one hardly ever falls for it anymore (hopefully)
I didn't mind the usual ads, but malicious ones? Is there anyway to vet what the ads are that appear on Cantr? (I'm also somewhat miffed by the constant google ads for ready-written college papers...)

Whoever you vote for.
The government wins.

You only have to block http://m1.nedstatbasic.net/basic.js to block all the pop-ups - however, this also makes you not show up on the traffic counter.
