two characters are attacked by a wild board

i have two characters working in the forests (not the same), they both have an iron shield, they both have been attacked by a wild board and one of them have lost 5 % and saved 25%, and the other one have lost 0 % and saved 43%,
Stragenly the iron shield of the character that has lost 0, is more deteriorated that the other (12 hour the first and 3 hours the second)
there is some explanation for this?

Deterioration has no effect on item function. I believe shielding is determined by tiredness, damage and physical strength, and probably a random factor.

Shield skill is the same as the attack skill, I believe.
Just because you're older, smarter, stronger, more talented... doesn't mean you're BETTER.

As Nixit said, the fighting skill could have an effect.
