Why are all the ***holes killed?

Postby Coramon » Sun Jan 29, 2006 6:17 pm

I've noticed that in Cantr, alll the assholes are killed. It's not very realistic. If someone comes up to your charry and slaps it, its an immediate sabering.
If you steal even if you turn back, you die. I've been noticing this for a long time. Capital punishment is way to popular in Cantr. If 2 people get in a brawl it doesn't end till 1 is dead. Etc, Etc, Etc,

Well, that's the way it is. How is posting in the forums going to change it?

It's a lot more efficient to kill an annoying person, or a person with a record of stealing things, than to take the effort to try to reform them, on the off chance that they'll become productive members of society.

Your RL perception of capital punishment is colored by the setting - modern societies have a lot more infrastructure in place to handle crime. When a town's judicial system consists of three guys with sabres and a lockable building, habeas corpus and due process are too inefficient to function.

Because that is the nature of human nature: Nasty and brutish. The only reason why humans don't act like this today in civilized society is 1) Social Law and 2) Moral law.

In the case of #1, in Cantr it is the law-enforcement officers that do the killing.

In the case of #2, it doesn't exist. There is no moral god in Cantr.

I'm sure if you went into the mountains of Afghanistan, and insulted a local warlord, your fate would be the same as if your Cantr charrie walked up to the local town leader and insulted them.

I think the commonness of death is a carry over from other games, book, movies, etc. It makes the game a little more interesting compared to our everyday lives. Between that and a very slim amount of alternative punishments, capital punishment is seen as the best way of getting rid of dissidents.

Not all the holes are killed though, some rule their cities with iron fists, others make themselves more useful than annoying and stay alive, still others live in the mountains and rant and rave to any passing travelers. A lot of it comes down to how well you can RP your way out of death.

I suspect a lot of the folks we are talking to actually want to get killed, so won't reform and just want to provoke others into killing them. So they can respawn in a different area. I would like to see a time out period instituted so you can't immediatley respawn untill you character would have turned say 22 or something. I know this has been suggested before...

You haven't been around Cantr much, if that's all you see.

I can think of at least tw cities, there are probably many more, where they might lock someone up for a bit, but won't kill them, they might even be turned into productive members of the society.

Characters generally only get killed if they are completely unresponsive, or continue to run after given ample warning - in which case, other options are very limited
Whoever you vote for.

yeah, like scarab wasnt killed (I think) even though he became a complete a-hole and started killing everybody and locking everybody up, he was just imprisoned (by the way how long has he been imprisned for?)

Not true, I have two reformed thieves. And in most of the cases I've seen of spawn and run thieves the townspeople try to talk them out of it, ask them to turn around and apologize. It's only when they refuse to respond or act insulting or violent or crazy that they get killed, and I think that most of the time it's because the player just wants to get rid of them. It's kind of disappointing because it can actually be fun for everyone involved if people playing thieves would just would just care a little more.

Mary Williams, Nick Blackrock, All the MacGregors, A number of StoneKnights, the Government of Olipifirovash (proper) ...

There's a lot of A-holes that aren't dead. Even when they're not in power, a lot live.

Lil T, Andur Oshan, Cross ...

I think alot of it has to do with the fact we know OOCly that they can just make another charrie, and it's so much less disruptive if the A-hole you have to deal with is dead. If you ever get even partially in charge of a town, you know how hard it is to just get people to get off thier butts and do things, even if you're handing out things ~FREE~, but when some wise-a$$ newspawn decides they're going to roleplay they have Torettes, slapping "random" people and cussing, it's just a quick way to get rid of the disruption. *Saber* "Take two of those and call me in the morning."

Hahaha yeah, when you reach a certain age, you can be an asshole for all you like, especially if you have a group of friends and/or good equipment to back you up.

It's been tried. Several times. She's not hard to get along with at all, as long as you do things her way. But when I had a charrie do that, she ended up with piles and piles of loot. Treat her like the Godfather. You're either in, or out. If you're in, you're taken care of. If you're out, you're "Taken care of".

Indeed. And my chars was one of those who actually tried some form of persuasion without violence, though that char was about to lose his patience.
(update: that char is actually losing patience with criminals... Hm... I wonder how he'll turn out in the future.)

Agar wrote:...All the MacGregors...

Heh... two of my chars have bumped into the MacGregors a couple of times, and both were treated well by them.
One of them even had a name that the MacGregors seem to link to their past somehow, and got invited to hook up with the MacGregors on two occasions.
That char is actually thinking about doing so, but wants to bring some life experience along.

As for the stone knights, or at least the ones that some of my chars have met (arrogant greedy selfish and a whole list of other not-so-knightly characteristics), if my chars would have access to trebuchets there'd now be flying stone knights
