It has taken two different characters of mine at least thirty years to build a car, but they both have them now. It takes time, determination, lots of help, and a good long life.

One charrie has used theirs quite a bit, the other, not yet. Then there is a couple towns I'm in that use their cars and vans constantly. Amazingly or not, they have found trustworthy people to drive them, and have rarely been disappointed.

However, we all remember Drew McKenzie.

I agree with Bowser's post, about the risk of loaning your car to workers and never seeing it come back. Players lose interest too frequently, so it is difficult to trust even well established characters.

I think the biggest thing holding this back is lack of long term cooperation. I am still not exactly sure why this is. The characters I have tried to build such an organization to build cars with have had horrible luck for some reason. (It can't be that I am just a bad businessman  ).

Just a few words on the subject for me.

Rich people don't travel.

Why should they? They've got a power base they need to keep under control, underlings to handle resource runs, and huge reserves of resources.

All travel does is take you away from everything you have, unless everything you have fits in the vehicle. Which won't happen until we can have buildings on ships, for the truely rich.

I didn't mean to make a literal observation, just a biased opinion.

My car is rarely in town. I've got good characters taking care of mine, and I think it boosts the amount of work my company can do.

It is a lot faster that way.

Having ten people on 10 tandem bikes is superior to having 10 people in a single equivalent vehicle for these reasons:
1) Ten people arriving in town on separate vehicles are militarily more impressive and more flexible. Politics in Cantr is all about "shock and awe".
2) They can carry just as much if not more and loading is faster since each rider loads his or her own bike.
3) Risk is spread more widely. People can be sent out more easily and with less caution needed, and returns always increase when more is ventured.
4) A tandem bike is an excellent reward for services rendered; more people will be retained and for longer.

I had seriously been considering whether Comrade Fran should build a larger vehicle, but she seems driven to build yet more bikes and get more of her commune mobile.

Not true. My power characters travel lots. Your slant is unduly pessimistic and you seem to be missing out on the concept of "social capital". Try reading Fukuyama on Trust.

True, if all those "bikers" have the samwe load, and can be organized well enough to all leave and arrive together.
But if this is not well enough coordinated... well, you just might end up supplying a rival town with bikes as they pick your "bikers" off one at a time.
I don't mean killing, neccisarily, but I've seen a simple example where a small number of bikes from one place was sent to another, for whatever reason, and at least the first two bikes ended up getting stolen and sent down different roads because there was sufficient time to do so between the arrivals.
Undoubtedly this would have met some retalliation by now, my char didn't stick around to see what followed, but still... having some of your bikes swiped and the people originally riding them locked up, doesn't sound that impressive.
Of course, the same goes for a fully loaded van if it gets stolen and the people originally on it are locked up, but still, with more people arriving at the same time there's a bit more chance that there'll be at least one awake who might be able to do something.
