No thats not the only reason to improve roads

Everything, except for people walking , travel faster on an improved road
As I said earlier typically speeds increase by about 20% to 30% for each level of improvement .

Also there is RP value ... I know of at least one character (another players) who'll get a Super Expressway named after them one day :)

Ok, so it works something like this...

Net speed = Vehicle Base Speed * (some loading factor) * road improvement factor

With Net Speed maxing at Road Max Speed.

Where the Vehicle Base Speed is in the Wiki, the road improvement factor is the 20%-30% per improvement mentioned earlier and the loading factor remains a mystery. And the road max speed being an extreemely high number that really will never come into play.

Something like that (and max speed is currently set so high that no maxing is ever performed)

I think we should publish the full details rather than the approximations. I might help with that. Calculating vehicle speed is annoyingly complex, because I made a nice formula for it, but it's not very intuitive :) ... It probably needs some kind of table.

I'll try and post something here (no time now) tonight or tomorrow, if I don't forget, and then I hope somebody will be so kind to publish it on the Wiki.

And yes, Anthony has been a bit anti-data-publishing and tried to limit data supply for as far as possible within the rules of his task as chair ;) ... You could lobby with our hopefully-soon-to-be-appointed new RD chair.

I'm putting everything on this thread in the wiki.

Any objection to using "pixel" as the wiki name for this unit? "Standard distance unit" gets cumbersome.

Are road lengths strictly dependent on the straight-line distance between the locations they connect?

Confirm: tiredness and damage affect walking speed?

1) Fine with me
2) Yes
3) No - currently they have no effect - just weight of inventory and road type

No :)

With newer islands, road lengths have been set automatically, using Pythagoras, so there, yes, it holds. But older islands had distances *before* they had locations / maps. The map was drawn on the basis of those distances. In some cases, I couldn't make it all fit, and some distances are way off (e.g. Lake Village - Stofer Mountains is a long road, but short distance ... I just explain it with a very steep winding path ;) ...)

Which also explains the incorrect directions of some of the early roads as well :D ... the reason they point south west when the actual direction travelled is north west for instance

No, it doesn't, because that was done automatically :p ... So that's a bug in the script I used, I suppose ...

Walking weightdelay is 5000.

Formula to calculate speed:

if there is no minimum number of 'drivers' set:
speed = vehicle_speed * engine_speed * road_speed_factor - weight / weightdelay
if there is:
speed = vehicle_offset_speed * engin... etc.
if there is, and a max nr of contributers is set:
speed = (vehicle_offset_speed + (vehicle_speed - offset_speed) / max_contributers * MIN(max_contributers, number - minimum number)) * engin... etc.

The last formula I don't understand myself :p

I leave it to you guys to figure a less cryptic description on the Wiki ;) ... Perhaps a table with all cars, the total number of days it takes to produce (including resource gathering and smelting etc.), and the speed at which it travels on a normal road.

I think I gave you enough info for now ;) ... Definitely more than Anthony ever wanted to give.

This all goes with the disclaimer that it might change, of course - the RD is still an active department ;)

Bus speed is 1. That's bad news for Akypor.
