Walking Speed?

Postby TatteredShoeLace » Fri Jan 27, 2006 4:04 am

My apologies, but the search yielded 84 pages.

The wiki lists vehicle speeds, but I don't recall the walking speed. Is it 1 unit? (a bike is 13)

I think I've asked before, but Tanner needs to know!

I'm pretty sure that's right.

Remember that walking and vehicle (land vehicle at least) speeds are effected in some not-really-specified way by mass loaded onto them...

An unencumbered,non-fatigued , healthy character walks at a speed of 10 units per day

Edit : Assuming they are walking on a route which has a speed limit higher than 10

Well...

Can you finally and clear explain speed / limits question?

Which limits are assigned to patch, sand roads, paved, expressways and highways?

Road speed limits for all route types are such that no existing vehicle is capped.

In terms of efficency of route , each level of improvement allows for speeds of about 20 to 30 % faster than the previous level . This is not strictly linear and the higher levels offer greater increases in speeds than the lower levels of improvement .

So, walking speed is always restricted to 10 units - even on highway? And eg. jeep or dirt motorcykle can't move on patch faster than eg. 15 units - and at paved road - faster than 25 units?

Yes to the walking speed question . Without looking up the speeds of specific vehicles yes in principle to the 2nd part

Could anyone tell me how speed in 'units' converts to a distance on the Cantr location map?

So if I am understanding this right, a bike and a dirt bike might travel at the same rate on a path, both at the max speed for the path? So it really only makes sence to make fast vehicles for fairly well improved roads, even if the vehicle can travel on an unimproved road, like a jeep or truck...

Any chance we could see the max speeds for the paths/roads added to the Wiki?

Wiki speed for walking and land vehicles is map units per day on a sand road with no cargo (and in the case of land vehicles that means no driver :) )

The location map is centred on the location of the viewer and and each small square (such as the orange one representing the user) is one map unit across.

I'm unsure of the speed ratings for boats published in the wiki, these are totally wrong (or at least are not based on the same measurement units as land travel) ,though they can be used to approximate the relative speeds of unladen vessels. It really is up to the Resource Department to release the comparable figures, I believe they had reasons why this was not done.

I was wondering more about the max speed of roads/paths ect. It doesn't make much sense to build a dirtbike for use only on paths if the max path speed is 15, much easier to build a bike or bike cart or something...

thanks Chris - I thought that's what it meant, but the ship speeds were making no sense.

I could have guessed it was just the RD being picky about data-release :P

The route type maximum speed is in the code , and that was what I was checking when I first mentioned this - when I look at the actual speed limits by route type I see these have been set so high that there are no vehicles who's speed will be capped by these - A dirt bike will always have a higher maximum speed that a bike or bike cart on the same route (at least for existing route types)

Great. So does that mean that the only reason to upgrade roads at this point is to allow more vehicle types to use them? I lilke it.
