Message in a bottle

Postby Just A Bill » Sun Jan 22, 2006 3:09 am

How about this, you create a bottle, it requires a blowing tube to make it and a glass oven or kiln, uses glass beads and perhaps rubber or wood (cork) to seal it. When its done you have a moveable container that can hold notes and perhaps a small quantity of resources.

Now if you on a shore you can cast it into the water, it begins at one of the undock locations for that beach. Then you wait... When currents are implemented, it moves like a ship that is not under power(under the mercy of the currents). When it hits a shore, chances are it breakes and the contents and bottle are lost. If it doesn't break it washes up in the nearest town with a shore and someone can pick it up.

In any condition where you would need to use one, where would you have a good old glass blowing kiln ready? :P

It strikes me as a complicated business to implement something utterly useless.

Perhaps a similar thing, but simpler to make, it wouldn't do any harm, but then again i'd contest the fact that currents would help when they are implemented...

I can see no point either. Carving a message on a log, perhaps would be easier.

Hehehe.

you find a log on the ground, it has inscriptions on it:
"Help me, i need you to get some soldiers here at once! Pirates have taken over the town!"

You take a log

You use a log on cooking meat

Well, you would never really need to use one, and since currents are not implemented, the suggestion was mostly in jest. Still, it might be interesting to cast random notes upon the waves and see where they end up. Perhaps when navigation aids are in place, you could advertise your coordinates to stimulate trade.

As to using a log instead, if I recall from an earlier post, no matter how convoluted the bottle making process, its probably simpler than the log making one. The log making one would have the advantage of demonstrating that you have access to timber...

You can always make a buoy by sending someone out on a raft with no food....

SCUBA,

Using coordinates have been discussed, but not implemented. See the following threads for more info...
