It depends I think... most of my newer characters start off with a single name, and then depending on their life experiences they may acquire a surname - sometimes through marriage, or through joinging a group/clan, or just by something they've done.
One recently decided to add "Boarsbane" as a surname after she was attacked multiple times by boars (with no damage), and then proceeded to kill one in a single spear shot.
Originally I started off with first and last names for all of my characters... waaaay back in the 300's. lol, but this way work for me at the current time and it's fun to see what they evolve to.

There was some woman running around insisting people refer to her as "The Beard" and other's join with her to become more "The Beard" 's. Odd little cult.
I also hate all the Johns, there's far too many of them! And Michaels too. Nothing against the people themselves but do you have to be so plain?
And when I saw Zoe the Beard, I was wondering if she really had a beard. But she didn't clarify that.

Even though it SHOULD be one name, as the second name is called a 'Family Name' and there aren't any families unless you have an OOC influence...
None of my chars start with a second name, but acquire it through experiences, i currently have a "Hunter" and a "Nickel"

Outstanding! I like it! I've always wondered about the surnames of my characters. Surnames have origins in the real world that have no bearing in Cantr. I plead guilty of this myself, but I like making up last names. I've never met a Grugnug.

I don't think it much matters how many names someone has, or whether they acquire them all off the bat or later. They both work. Some of my characters go by their "full" name, if you will, others never mention it, even in introductions, unless asked. But they all have one. No particular reason, just how I named them.
I do find it ironic that people use the statement that surnames are based on human tradition and totally non-Cantrian as a reason not to use them, then proceed to use a single name and add a descriptive "last" name as the character grows, just like during history...er...in some places humans started giving...um...surnames.

Surnames are mostly originating from what the profession of a person was IRL way back when. AKA; John the Smith was shortened into, John Smith. But now surnames have family relations. I think surnames are great, as long as they are relevent, such as hunter or nickel. However irrelevent names really have to place except to amuse the player, AKA; Grugnug.

I thought people were complaining about charachters starting out with them, not about getting them as a "title" of sorts.
Myself, I'm guilty of both. My first charachters have surnames, my later ones dont, after I considered this.
Funny thing, though. My two english characters surnames are "Longbow" and "Ironbeam". Longbow was just volunteered for city guard duty, and is making a longbow to make that easier. Ironbeam has worked as a mason for his last year (Wooden beam, get it?

I'm guilty of both too. But both basing a surname (added later) on a job, skill, or event, or having one that's basically unrelated to the character (as most of our current surnames IRL do) are both human tradition, so to do one and say the other's wrong (or less right, or whatever) is sort of contradictory. It's like reporting a "crazy" newspawn thief, but then saying "Bless You", burying the dead (at this point totally for the convenience of the player, to shorten the object list), or saying things like "Good afternoon", they're all human carry-overs into the game. (I especially like the last one - I have to force myself not to ask "What's a noon?" since there isn't even a 12 on the Cantr clock.
)
For the record, I find the descriptive names interesting myself, but they're still based on the human tradition, not IG needs for a surname in the first place, at least there's no real need in any of the areas my characters are in. So either way works, in my opinion, although I might have to start a new character and not even name him until he does something interesting. Or maybe start them out with a generic name and change it later... Either could be fun.

I don't really mind last names...we think of them as 'surnames', but in Cantr they have nothing to do with families or anything like that. If you can call your character two meaningless syllables like 'Sura', why can't their name actually be four meaningless syllables like 'Sura Latishe' and have everyone call them by the first two for short?
Besides names of real life celebrities or characters from books, which are highly irritating, I find myself mildly annoyed by 'badass' names.
Two I can think of right off are 'Malice Kane' and 'Darkwing Avenger'. (I can't remember who played Darkwing, but I know he uses the forums...so no offense, I just happen to dislike that name.)
I could give other examples, but I think you get the idea. Names that just scream "I can't be trusted!" when in all honesty, if I had an evil mastermind named Ironfist Blackheart or whatever I would probably have them introduce themselves as 'Fluffy McPhearson' until they were ready to put their evil plans in motion.
