speedometer / kilometre meter

Postby T-shirt » Sat Jan 14, 2006 6:19 pm

Not realy a machine that calculates your speed, but counts the distance you have travelled. In dutch it's called a kilometerteller, internet translates it as kilometre meter, but does not sound like a decent english word in my non-native english ears.

Anyhow, I suggest a machine you can build on a vehicle which reports the distance travelled. Preferably with two meters; one for the total distance travelled and one for trip distance (distance travelled since last 'reset'). If these two meters are accepted a reset button should be added too, to reset the trip meter to zero.

I have not thought about the resource cost of such a machine, but it could be something like 25 grams of iron, 10 grams of rubber and a screwdriver to build it all together in about a day and a half. If it needs to be a rare machine a bit of glass could be added as a resource as well.

Or just take two print screens after an update, compare them, use it to work out the 'one tick' distance travelled by your ship/vehicle and do it yourself :P

You know, I would really enjoy a collection of gauges, not just a distance tracking gauge.

How about a speedometer? Lets us see how fast we're going? Handy to know how much slower you're going now that you've loaded your long boat down with limestone.

For that matter, a weight gauge. Just some simple math to show about how many % of your capacity you've filled.

You'd probally need jewelers tools to make them, along with the aforementioned glass, so I don't see them coming into being any quicker than the tubes that were added, but they would be quite nice.

I thought boat speeds were fixed, not related to the weight they carry? I'm probably wrong, if I am, tell me, and I'll have to re-do what I just did...

Their maximum speed is governed by their cargo - Carry more and you'll move slower

What about land vehicles? If a person is hurt, do they travel slower? Just the bikes, or motor vehicles too?

Speed is such an enigma, even for those of us that can go from Baaak to Plaekur Forest east in five days.

Again, with both people and land vehicles, maximum speed is based on the weight carried (and road type) . Tiredness and physical health don't affect travel .

The speed function is not linear , it is more of a unifom step function.

People can be dragged about easier when they're injured, do they weigh less when hurt?

Could we beat a pirate crew to within an inch of thier lives, pack several of them on a raft, and then make an odd escape over a lake?
