Coin purses

Postby Sho » Sun Jan 08, 2006 2:23 am

A very common complaint (well, not really, but common among those who've seen them) about coins is that they are hard to carry. A coin purse would reduce this problem. It will also be forwards-compatible with whatever people decide they want to change about currency.

Coin purse: Easy to make - 200 grams of hide, half a day and a needle and knife would be reasonable. Works like an envelope in that coins in your inventory can be put in and taken out of the purse. As with the envelope, taking coins out takes you to a page where you can see what coins are inside and select which you want to take out.

Characters can trade purses instead of passing hundreds of coins and irritating everyone in sight - since the purse is cheap, that's not a problem.

Purse weight is the one thing that might not be so easy to code. ProgD, anyone?

As far as I know, the only reason ProgD hasn't done this (or anything like it) before is because they haven't programmed being able to put objects in storage yet.

It stores resources, like all the fixed containers, I think. Items and resources are entirely different...

So essentially I produced a pack that an inventory would be good for in itself?

Pretty much. I assume the rationale was that you'd find it convenient for rare materials that you'd only carry a small amount of, like herbs.

I think it was supposed to keep you from eating your healing foods before the change came where they are the last thing eaten.

That could only be done by eliminating the names of the coins. You'd have just "gold coins," "iron coins" and so on. The way coins work now, that would make them mostly useless, as there would be no protection from forgery, which is the only reason to use coins right now.

I don't know an aweful lot about coins, none of my characters have ever been around coins.

Can't someone just build a coin press and start pumpin' coins?

Yeah, but the press produces coins with the name of the coin press attached to them.

So, El_Skwidd's Coin Press produces coins that say El_Skwidd's Coin Press on them. I would hope no two coin presses can have the same name, so forgery is a moot issue.

Unless you were sneaky and made a press called "El Skwidd's Coin Press" or "El_Skwidds Coin Press," but I've yet to see a currency worth the effort yet.

I don't think it got posted, but I had a brainstorming conversation which suggested making coins as resources. I won't bore with the techcnical details, but it might solve the problem, though it will take some programming to do. That would be up to ProgD to decide which is easier. Guess I should poke Flyspray and Jur to try and get ProgD / RD cross communication going? :)
