Characters you love to see...

Postby Solutions Maximus » Thu Jan 05, 2006 4:09 am

Well, I started this topic with the intent to give players ideas on the types of characters that they should play.

I'll start off.

Liberals
Clever thieves (not take and run)
Religious zealots that are actually zealous
a criminal of riddles (sends riddles to let their hunters know where they are)
Bounty Hunters (with or without a posse)
doctors
people that talk

That is the simplified version of my list. I would enjoy seeing what you guys like.

I like some of your ideas, but some I have seen around.

Liberals - We have socialists and animal rights type people, I’d consider those pretty liberal.
Clever thieves - I like to think that my thief is pretty clever because he is patient with his thievery and he’s still alive, both a bonus for a theif.
Relibious zealots - I haven’t run across any non sleepy religious zealots so that might be an idea for one of my leftover spots.
A criminal of riddles - They would probably get caught to fast, but if he can stay ahead of the people with bigger swords for a few years, that would be really cool to be/track.
Bounty hunter - I considered a bounty hunter, but the problem with that is most people kill the people they dislike themselves or send one of their trusted cronies to do it. There is not a lot of outsourcing to other organizations, even for killing.
Doctors - There is a house of healing somewhere, I think that’s the closest we can have to doctors without new programming.
Talkers - I’m in a few towns that won’t shut up, and I’ve found it’s not to hard for one character with a decent personality to wake up a town.

I still have open slots so when I see a role that’s lacking or fun, I have been able to create it.
Matter of fact I just recently spawned up a conspiracy theorist because I think that will be fun, It would be better if he weren’t in such a remote place but I’ll make do. Like all my characters, I am starting him out pretty boring and building his personality based on what’s around him, but with some personality undertones.

Bounty hunters, from what I've seen, just pop out of the ground. Somebody decides he ought to be a bounty hunter, without ever having heard of the concept, or even seen a criminal.

It sounds cool, after all. But if you think about it, it breaks down. Tracking people's nearly impossible, over the kinds of distances that make it a profession rather than a diversion. There's no way to provide proof of death unless you have a vehicle to transport your target's carcass. The people in the town that hires you would have to be willing to trust and tolerate someone who offers to kill for money (even if he claims to be pickey about targets, it's a bit worrysome), and the people in the town where he catches his target have to let some stranger ride in and kill another person...who may well have at least a perfectly good cover story, if he hasn't actually joined the community.

Of course, probably the real breaker is lack of business. How many people would have any use for the thing? In the modern cantrian world, if someone isn't in your town, or just down a road, odds are they don't have any impact on you. And not many identified thieves or murderers escape the immediate pursuit to need hunting down.

if you're a petty note theif, or the typical grab-in-go then yes. But if you plan it right, you can get away. I've noticed that in cantr its harder to be crooked and to be on the straight and narrow

My communist actually is coordinating the entire population of the land to make all the animals, save two species, extinct.

One (former) thief I had started out a note thief and now runs the town he was caught in. My other (current) thief has stolen everything she has, and has never been noticed as a thief.

I had a professional thief chaser, but did it to garner favor, not pay. Worked pretty good. Got four years or food, IN REAL LIFE, out of it, along with a horde of weapons and a boat. All for chasing spawn and run thieves, very well.
Reality was never my strong point.

That’s neat Agar.

I think it would be good to see a psychiatrist or two for all the crazies we have around, and more importantly for the "what does this button do" newspawns. Help adapt them to society.

Already in the works on that one. It'll be interesting to watch the arguments over whether to just lock people up or let them be evaluated. Should allow for some interesting "insanity plea" RP, whether or not they let my character do it... :D

Of course, if everyone plays IC, which the ones I've mentioned such a thing to so far have, they're dubious at best, and most just act like I might be in need of that sort of help myself. I think the ones feigning (very little) interest are just doing it to humor my character. But of course that's how new things are when they're introduced.

I should know soon whether or not it'll work, at least in that place. Of course everywhere is different. Try to get some leniency from the Stone Knights because somebody's not quite right mentally. They'd probably just use that as more reason to kill them. Or make them join up. Birds of a feather and all... :D

I'd like to see lawyers, but that seems a little difficult with most towns having "drumhead" justice.

Essentially what I like to see are characters with a drive to achieve something, whether it be wealth, power, fame, pretty clothes, revenge, love, peace on earth, conversion of the heathen, law and order, security, belonging, approval of others, etc, etc. It doesn't matter, so long as the character acts consistently in terms of those drives. And they don't have to be publically announced either. They can be hidden from view. Generally, there are rather too many characters that lack some drive which colors their interactions with others.

Seconded.

More specifically, I'd like to see an alchemist: someone who swears he'll find a use for barley, who seeks the secret formula that transforms potatoes into iron, who is convinced that if he can just find the raw materials for his apothecary table, he'll be able to make the Elixir of Eternal Life. Fruitless tasks, all, but who knows; he might stumble across something useful while he's working.

I have one who keeps trying to turn bananas into carrots, somebody switched them out the first time so she’s convinced it works, now she is trying to figure out why it didn't work the second or third time and is putting here experiments on hold.

But she gets distracted to easily to make a really good alchemist.

Lake Village at least had a shrink set up shop. I would love to see more of this too, and more organized scientists as well. Some real universities and educational systems would be very cool to see. Of course, this usually depends on people roleplaying with the philosophy that their charatcers don't spawn with infinite knowledge of the universe, but I don't mean to send the thread off on a tangent here. (Though it is nearing the end of the first page so the divergence is overdue  )

I tell you what would be great: prostitutes played with style. You need to probe out the possible clients, be discreet about it, don't push it. Not everybody wants to buy such services, especially not from a person who can't play. Most of the hookers I've seen appear to be played by some lustful teenagers, a terrible hurry to go straight into business. They don't even care about getting paid so much. No sign of self respect. No sign of realism. And what is it with these people who grope somebody totally out of the blue? I bet even real prostitutes wouldn't do that, you need to get at least some sign of interest first.

I'd also like to see thieves (or people in general) who express their pain when they are hit or shot. 99% of people just keeps running without a sound, even though you'd send a crossbow bolt through them dealing 50%. (Not that any of my characters had ever held a crossbow yet, but this is a heightened example. Be that people who are not spawn and run thieves also rarely express pain, maybe it's because when someone hits you, you get the feeling they don't care if you're suffering because otherwise they wouldn't have hit you. Well the player might care, even if the character was a cold-hearted pirate.
