I got a guy whos known for coming to people's aid and always being very powerful with his weapon...well, hes not as good but that hasn't stopped him from helping out when asked or needed. And hes a novice but I do sometimes him improving, like for a while he might be doing this as the norm but then he goes up a point....So I don't really have a problem with the system...well, just that how slow it is. But I've seen it work for anothers before my eyes and I guess I know how to speed up the process, but rather keep it fair and IC.

Yeah... I have a guard who's been a guard for all his life (he's now like 43), and he's a novice. I hear ya Surly.
Just because you're older, smarter, stronger, more talented... doesn't mean you're BETTER.

But it's a good change except for the way it sort of wrenched people's lives apart, mostly guards and what not. Those lives are already wrenched apart, taking the skills away won't help so much as training those skills will at this point.

They're a good change and have to be implemented some time. Taking them away now just means other characters will be hurt later when it's tried again.

True. I'd like to see improvement by an entire category (as in from Novice to Efficient, or whatever) in a few years of constant use. It doesn't look like I'm going to see that with my characters.

You might be an efficient worker of 999 points and your buddy an efficient of 1 points and you would never see the difference. Where as the skillful of 1 point would be so much better than you, and the novice of 999 points so much worse than your buddy of efficient-1. Hard to compare, that's the problem. If there really are 2000 points between the skills or something, there should be more steps.

One of my chars just hunted three animals and had a skill-raise for the third animal.

To be honest, even if you start out terribly, all these problems could be solved with better skill improvement, and I think many would agree, perhaps it's not fully implemented? In any case, it appears I got the nice end of the stick, one of my charries does 15 with a bone club and blocks 25 with a bone shield, AND is an expert at crafting them. However, I don't have much experience with the pros and cons of skills, all my other chars are very social.

But, in real life it takes years to be skilled at something. If everyone became a skilled hunter in their early 20's then there wouldn't be anything special about it.

Be patient. I'm sure when some of the characters get into their 30's and 40's they show big improvements.
