I, for one, agree with this idea. How about, say, 10 variable descriptors distributed evenly among the population. Then, there is still the risk of people looking the same (maintaining the value of actual witnesses somewhat), but not everyone is "a man in his twenties"
Like:
a blonde man in his twenties
a tall man in his twenties
...
Oh, and sorry for bumping. I had this idea myself, and was happy to see I wasn't entirely alone.
