How is this abuse? Waiting till people are asleep would be what many smart criminals would do. And I thought that was much of the point of this suggestion, so I fail to see how it's abusing anything.

I agree that this could lead to abuse..although a bit hard....it could be done...even if a criminal waits for you to sleep.. they don't know if you are awake and watching or truely asleep...I think an indicator would be a bad thing.

It would be bad for the game because the best way to defend against criminals striking is to have your guards on alert 24/7. Some of us try to have lives outside of Cantr, as hard as that may seem to believe for others, and (as Jos points out) the game is set up for people who don't have time to camp out in front of a computer. If there was an "awake" light, the people who have to schedule time around work to check characters will be put at a severe disadvantage. That sucks.
As for the IRC style of personal chat option, I have thought this would be cool, but realize it would quickly get very irritating as people would find it even harder to stay in character. In some bigger cities it already feels like a chat room to me the way it is. (Stupid Lake Village, you will be the death of my sanity)
My suggestion is get a room. Take your lengthy conversations indoors and put an end to Cantrian air pollution.
