RD/ProgD announcements of changes

Postby Sho » Sun Dec 18, 2005 3:29 pm

Can RD and ProgD please announce changes when they are implemented? There have been quite a few changes recently (e.g. the gas purifier changes) that players only found out about through word-of-mouth, if at all, because the change was only discovered when someone noticed the change in-game. Occasionally it has taken a significant amount of time for the change to get reflected in the wiki, and when they happen I have a devil of a time making sure that they actually happened and the person who made the edit isn't just making stuff up.
I'm not asking for any official Q-and-A period for everything, or even a public game-message announcement (not least because I don't see those announcements) - just a small forum post, quiet wiki edit or a PM/e-mail to me or kabl00ey would suffice for my needs (though if the public at large wants the public announcement, they can start clamoring for it here).

There's been a gas purifying change? Does this mean my hard-made production rate calculations have expired?

Oh that thing. Blah, I wouldn't mind if someone sped up gas processing a bit... Ain't bitumen for improving roads?

Not in Cantr - here bitumen is used with the mixing bowl to create seal wax.

More importantly (in my opinion), gas can now be purified using wood instead of coal. Major impact on the relative values of gas and coal - it means that coal is no longer necessary for steel.

But I didn't bring this up so we could discuss the changes. I made this post because I think those changes are an example of how significant changes are often unannounced, giving some players advantages over others in a way that the wiki and the repeal of the "find out in game" rule were intended to prevent.

Sho, that happened a long time ago... and was fairly well publicised.

In fact, that happened before the wiki I believe... or am I wrong?

Wood purification of gas has been implemented as long ago as I remember, yes.

As for improved communication...wouldn't we all like that. I generally try to announce things as best I can once I learn of them. I'll try to do a better job in the future.

Whilst communication is not always perfect, most significant changes made by ProgD in the past 6 months have been publically announced, often with plenty of notice prior to implementation as we will endeavour to do in the future.

The main method of communicating major changes is via in game messages. This is the preferred method as all active players see the message, and it can be easily translated by the Languages Department.

I guess the main problem with that is that our main wiki editor doesn't get player messages.
