And sheesh, if someone gets raped then I don't think it's gonna help that the thing is swept under the carpet and never talked about. This example of a group where the players knew one had been raped before and tried to avoid mentioning the word, sure it's considerate but other people don't know about it and she'll be likely to run into the word eventually. I don't think the word itself would make her run away screaming, it's the memories and impressions linked to it.

I have a character who was almost raped, and she still can't talk about the incident straight, but it doesn't mean that her life would be totally ruined. Most of the time she doesn't think about it, it just gets on the surface sometimes.

Off topic: Aww, that Westerly sleeping signature is Sooooooooooooooooooo cute! Just gotta-gotta poke him, or at least pinch his cheek.

Thetaris, should we ban killing and the mention of killing too? Because I'm sure there are players who've actually had someone close to them murdered, and being reminded of it would traumatize them.

Death in games is now a socially acceptable implement of any game. There are few people against this.
Introducing rape is sick, and fullfilling some wierd people's desires.

Before I continue this argument, is the suggestion that there is a button to rape?

No, my upbringing of a 'Forum' was not a place to chat or discuss, it was a place to 'fight' and 'flame' and argue. If you have not yet, www.worldofwarcraft.com and check out their forums. That forum was also part of my influence. EVERY SINGLE post ends in a fight after an angry argument.

I apologize, however.

It's actually very difficult not to begin arguments (not that I mean to be offensive or make people angry, just a heated-debate), all the tools to begin an argument are here:
-Quoting
-Using bold text for emphasis
-Emoticons to show your opinion, (against :x , not sure :? , joking  )
-And the list goes on.

I need people to remember when I argue with them I don't actually hate them, or am trying to be mean to them on purpose.

I just thoroughly enjoy a heated, intellectual debate/discussion/argument, knowing full well that I'm not actually making an enemy.

Personally, I know for a fact I do not hate anyone on this forum, not even Pie. Whether the entire community hate me back is another side.

But I'll always be as active as I am, while my post level is low, I do read a lot, and I will be here until I am banned or the site is shut down.

A few points I wish to make here:

#1 - People should always try and be considerate of others feelings but not to the extent of placing them in a plastic bubble and make sure no one mentions words or topics.

#2 - I coach a high school lacrosse team and one season a new kid joined. He was cocky, called people names and insulted them in a joking way. The entire team was pissed at the guy, asking, "who is this jerk to say such things?". We got to know him over the next two years and everyone ended up really liking him. He still acted the same way, but when a friend makes those comments it is accepted when a stranger makes them it is not.

#3 - This is not your old forum, just like I my character tells people that come into the Forest, "Perhaps you should learn and observe the customs of the region, maybe read the notes before you do something that might get you killed."

#4 - Heated debates can be fun when you have one with who actually knows how to make a point without constantly trying to insult everyone and fight. I never have anything constructive to say, so most of my posts are responses to other people and usually try to poke fun at what they said. Poking fun and being sarcastic are different than trying to pick a fight and argue and berate anyone who has a difering opinion.

#5 - I wish Noonan was still alive so he could be killed again.

This topic, if you had read the first post, deals with the people who through means of "rp" (and I put rp in quotations since it's so poor that calling it rp brings shame on that noble abbreviation) force sexually offensive things on other players. And we ask where is the limit.

You can play an act of rape in a way that is respectful and considerate to the opponent, even if the event was traumatic to the character. Actors play rape scenes too, scriptwriters create rape scenes and no one goes blaming them that they're freaks and enjoy what they're doing.

Ok, I enjoy powerplays. It creates a crunch in the bottom of the stomach, like watching a good thriller. And I'm sure many people feel the same, even though they don't dare to mention it under the fear of being branded a pervert.

Long ago, another character of mine was imprisoned by bandits. The leader touched her and called her sweet names. Much was not written but little hints were enough to create a very tense athmosphere. Sometimes I was terrified that she would be raped, but partially I was expecting it, since the element of surprise is a strong factor and if you expect the worst, nothing can shock you. In the end she escaped during his absense, and died a virgin in another town. Later I've gotten the impression that the player in question doesn't do sex rp, but it still doesn't negate the feeling that it could have happened.

Though I was sometimes furious at the captor, I could discuss with the player OOC normally. There were pent up fears that I could speak out only much later - from this experience I suggest that if it's in any way possible, after being done with a shocking scene ingame (and it doesn't have to be rape, it could also be an argument, a traumatic death and so on), discuss it OOC with the player(s) involved. It's called debriefing and it's commonly used in LARP'ing. Roleplaying can help you safely process things that you wouldn't be ready to encounter in real life.

---

Off topic: I think it's pretty terrible that wounding and killing people in games has become so ordinary that no one gets shocked about it, or considers it offensive. It's totally natural. And thieves keep running with wounds that are just percentages, though if a real life person suffered the similar wound, they would be curling up on the ground, crying.

And Thetaris, that last post just improved your image in my eyes.

Children run around playing cops and robbers or cowboys and indians all the time. Murder and death in Cantr is no different than that, and children understand that. However, I've never seen a child play raper and rapist. Human sexuality is deeply rooted in the psyche and is a very private and personal thing. While murder may morally be a worse crime IRL, in a game, rape is far more damaging. Any game that accepts players under 18 should not tollerate any public sexual play, consentual or otherwise, and should always act on player complaints of unsolicited sexual play, if not for moral reasons, for legal ones. A parent that catches their 12 year old having virtual sex with another player might freak out and seek legal recourse against the owner.

Edit:
Technically, in a game that accepts minors, all sexual play should be prohibited, public or private, consentual or otherwise, but it would be nearly impossible to prevent. I haven't read the documentation closley enough to know if there is a disclaimer warning of possible exposure to mature content, but that really just means that if there is one, it isn't prominent enough.

Yeah, not public. It's between two people (or in some cases, more) but the people present should be in a way asked if they're ready to witness such a case as players. And since it's pretty impossible in an uncontrolled environtment, such as a town, the adult part should be limited to whispers or be done on a road or inside a building.

well in the eyes of most of my chars, rapists=target practice
and realistically for one char to be capable of raping another they should be overwealmingly stronger such that they can single hadedly drag thier victim, or a group of dirty pirates dragging thier victims on thier ship or w/e for example
i'm proud to say that a few of my chars have killed rapists before IC

More to the topic,
I guess I'd be okay with rape then, if the person is asked.
However, if the person is not asked, I would be greatly enangered if the ProgD or PD (or whoever does it) doesn't give a heart attack to the player who did the wrong.
You might say it's a bit harsh, but honestly, you can't take the risks of:

-The person being an actual rape victim
-The person being a child
Evolution is unconformity.

Yes, but that would be interfearing with the game. I mean, IRL, GODS OR GODESSES Don't give people heart attacks to people who do rong. Nope. They let us do that.

And it's not like the offender just walks up to a person and *rapes* them. (If so I imagine there probably would be some action taken by the PD, though it's also likely they'd simply be ignored by the person they're attacking and told what a lousy roleplayer they are and to read the wiki and shape up, or else...)

In a situation like this there'd be RP involved beforehand from both the would-be rapist and the victim, which would let both parties 'feel each other out' so to speak. If the victim's player didn't want to go along with it they'd have plenty of time to try and have the character roleplay their way out of the situation, or as a last resort put a stop to it with a message to the other player. (This would be the one situation where getting out of an IC situation through OOC methods would be acceptable, IMHO.)

I'm not too sure about this, because if you need to RP it, it would become quite distressing for the person playing the victim. Although since it's RP you can do almost anything and just hope that the other char goes along with it. However you do get those that don't roleplay properly and insist on going a certain way:

Jack says: "*He pushes her down on the floor*

You say: "*She runs over to Susan and hides behind her*

Jack says: "*he finds her, then pushes her on the floor again*"

Now that's just bad roleplaying and the woman should have been able to get out of that situation if the person playing Jack wasn't so bad at roleplaying. However in another situation if the woman/man had no choice I think you would be allowed to just ignore or refuse it. I know that I wouldn't want to have to pretend I'm being raped.
