A 2D Cantr Game?--Created/being created by Me!

Postby Thetaris » Thu Dec 01, 2005 9:57 am

I have been deeply thinking about making a 2D Cantr game using various programs etcetera. I do plan on making it regardless of votes, but I plan on opening this up as a temporary assesment and judgement and suggestion topic. I will litterally make it based on exactly what is said here. The only problem is, I have this strange alter ego to make it into a fantasy RPG! A couple of lines of codes and it's ruined. So I need the support of the Cantr community to come up with new ideas and to keep me on track.

Basically, it would:
-Be online
-Be live, able to instantly react with other players
-Use the current Cantr physic laws (ie injuring someone once a day)
-Be 2D and visible
-Have me as a server (until I find a different one)
-Have a few towns (sorry, with names for now)
-Enable you to make your own buildings and vehicles
-Have the realistic touch Cantr doesnt have (as in, if we were to look at a Cantr city, everyone would be standing in each other, as if like ghosts, unless working on a project, and all the buildings would be directly in front of you, and the animals would also have the ghost-like ability to be in each other)

And, if you're lucky, in the not-to-distant future after that,
-Have a remodelling of the world so it's exactly like the Cantr text-based one
-Import all your characters into it
-Become 3D, and able to follow your character directly behind him(edit: And her! Woops!)

BE WARNED THOUGH! I am trying my hardest not to make it into an instantly-satisfying game. It would only be liked by Cantr players, as it will still be slow like Cantr. Don't hope for a RTS RPG! (real time strategy RTS)(role-playing game RPG).

Hurrah, there will be no:
-Dragons
-Dungeons
-Magic spells
-Magic
-Goblins
-Special Combo Attacks

So yeah. Before I start (I actually already mapped the furthest corner, heh, but that's nothing), are there any disagreements, suggestions, dislikes or not-wants? Or any appreciations, compliments, ideas, assistments, etc?

Why don't you ask Jos about starting up work on a graphical version of Cantr instead? In your "idea" I find nothing original, only Cantr all over again besides the 2D.

Edit : And about the next step in making it 3D. Hmmm, good luck in finding the money, artists, servers, and game engines to cope with that. :)

Like EchoMan said, why not get on staff?

Jos has a plan for his Roadmap, which will open up the map for free roaming, and we could always use more programmers. If you got the skills, bring it.

It generally takes years to make a good working mmorpg.

I thought Pie started this topic

I only 'newspawned' for the first time a few days ago, but I think this is a great idea. Maybe the visuals would look like Runescape or Habbo Hotel ('game' sucks, graphics are ok).

I think graphics are the main thing missing in Cantr. For newbies at least, it's kinda daunting to have all that text but no visual references. However, I disagree with the 'ghost-like people and animals' idea. How is that "realistic"?

Anyway, I think it's better to be able to 'see' people and things in an area rather than only have an description about them...

That is the reason I spend way to much time in Cantr as well. It feels like a step up from a MUD but not all pretty like the MMORPG's...

Graphics are the suck.

If you make a 2D game, I won't play it. YOU HAVE LOST A PLAYER!!!!

But seriously, graphics work badly on my compy, which is why I picked Cantr. NO GRAPHICS!

Keep it text based... I admit this is a selfish reason, but I can't play graphic games, and there are so few text based ones around.

Let me state some things.
It will be runable on any computer as old as a typical windows 95. If you have any worse, you're an idiot and missing out. :P No offence, but it's the truth, a slightly better computer would cost under $500.

And it would only not work with the 3D graphics.

I can complete the MMORPG at the start of Febuary next year, easily, if not earlier.

As per what I said prior, I already have a couple of excellent programs that give me a boost. I won't have to program an aweful much as these programs do what I need. NO, it's not RPG Maker, it's a few others.

Graphics are dealt with. I already have all the land terrain, they look really nice- not squarish or anything. I have:
Grass land
Snowy area
Rough mountain area

And beings(human/Cantrian) are very simple to design.

As for the 3D aspect of it, that honestly is not hard. I have a 3D game making program that is specific for that issue.

-----BESIDES!!-----
Among the main reasons I originally thought of making it was for advertisement for Cantr. Once a player has played a fair bit of it, there would be a link to Cantr.net- it would be like, wow, this is where it came from? I'd ensure that Cantr.net would be a fair bit more diverse.

The game is a basic visual on the Cantr world.

I hope I cleared a little more up.

Are you an idiot?

There are more text-based games than graphical games. I actually have a collegue next to me agreeing with me.

Um, that's not what I'm doing, the Ghost Like people. It's the physics of Cantr, if you were to actually see Cantr.net visually, the towns would look like a bunch of people on top of each other- but in each other. That's why I plan on making this game- to remove that wierdness.

Pie probably did start this topic. But I doubt it went anywhere.

And of course it takes years to make a GOOD mmorpg. I've made plenty of lan-based MMORPG's in weeks. Yes, weeks.

I just need a server, but for now, I'll keep my computer as one.

There are programs out there that produce these 3D games.
