I've taken a poke at Civ 4. It's interesting, they introduced a few new concepts, did away with a lot of the things people just found purely annoying (things like pollution, corruption, etc.) and implemented them in new concepts. There's also a couple nice touches that don't bog things down - having Lenoard Nimoy do the voiceovers for the techs is pretty cool.
Overall, though, I'd say it doesn't live up to its predecessors. The new graphics are 'cool', but it STILL chugs on my system - a 1.8 GHz box with 512 MB of ram and a ATI Radeon 9700. It is NOT a wussy little box.
On the other hand, the Age of Empires games are just pure crap.
I can't stand them. At all.
I still enjoy playing Alpha Centauri, where you could actually change the terrain with your terraforming units, worry about the sea level rising and falling from pollution, and other such things.
As a side note, there's also a game called 'FreeCiv' which is pretty much the definition of 'lean and mean'. It's all open source and a lot of fun to play - it lets you define the graphics engine however you want - oldskool top-down sprites, or isometric tiles. Very nifty.

I'm on freeciv from time to time if anyone wants to catch me on there and kick my arse in it.

Hmm, perhaps we should have an online Cantr match or something ^_^ sometime.

I couldn't get that link to open up, and I don't think my school lets me access the cantr chats, but I'd like to learn a)where to DL the game and B) how to set up my own server

That link has been dead for some time, nite. Try actually viewing a link instead of just googling it.
You can download it from my server at nickroberts.zapto.org, or it's also hosted on sourceforge, so just google for "sourceforge freeciv".
We've already had a Cantr game with 4 Cantrians, and I'd like to have larger games in the future. Just come down to the IRC and message me!

It was working (because I was looking at it) when I posted it.

Not to take a stab at you, as I generally do to forum members (not to be mean!

In fact, just to make you feel worse Sav (hehehe) I'm buying a second hand , quote, 'piece of junk' laptop for $1k thats better than your system (2ghz, a 512 and 256 RAM stick(s), average graphics card (worse than yours I think) and pentium 3)
As I said, it wasn't a stab at you. So don't take it wrong, I'm just advising you

But, I bought mine in Australia, so the prices might vary.\
(might I add, 250 gig hard drive, DVD/CD burner, DVD/CD reader, multimedia computer (ie it has 8 usb slots, firewire ability and inbuilt card reader) AND WOOT! No Floppy Disk drive! Go the era of no-longer-used floppy disks!!!!!)
Evolution is unconformity.

Enh, I only spent $650 on this system, new, including the graphics card.

No biggie, it's an old box. I know it's not the latest and greatest, and that there's better out there. I just can't afford it right now. I think prices are pretty much even on computer parts between countries...
I will say, however - 8 USB slots? Dude, I've got four, and I only ever use one. What the heck do you need eight for? Are you running a USB keyboard and mouse?

I actually still have a computer sitting around with both a 3 1/4" drive and a 5 1/2" drive, back when I was ambidextrious.

I want AoE 3
.
I have plenty of people telling me to play Civ games but It has never had the appeal that the Age series has had for me. And I have a computer that can handle the over-natural graphics of AoE 3 and everything, although I do need to turn the quality low (unless they made changes from the demo).
But I know it will eat all my time, so the only way I'd get it is if someone got it for me on Christmas. I'm not going to buy myself into a time eater, I already spend too much time playing Cantr. so two time eating games = too bad of grades = one sad salad.
