If so, exactly what will the change be? And exactly when will it occur?

I don't like this
Well, not that i don't like the idea, but why make it harder for people just starting out to feed themselves... Like it or not, i think there will be mass starvation. Unless you make it easier to make said items which can be used to cook food.
Plus, why make food take up more of our space... it would make us less productive, less things will get done. It's hard enough as it is. You're only going to lose a bunch of players if you insist on making the game harder.

I'm really dumb
I just noticed some changes in my charactors and i think i misunderstood / over-reacted. So if i'm right, we can collect more in a day, but it's going to take up more space... i still don't really understand how much we need to eat... i hope it's less. But as long as it isn't more related to how much time it takes to get food, i wont mind. I feel like such a big dummy for getting all pissed off. Anyways... hopefully this whole thing will go over smoothly and none of my characters will starve.

This doesn't make the game harder for new players, since they'll still be able to get eight days worth of potatoes from one day's work. It'll just wiegh more. The people who are going to be hit hardest by this are the ones who wander from place to place on foot, and really, that shouldn't be an easy thing to do.

"Well, Bobby... you spawned in a place with only rice, sand and soda, and the only animals are bears. But hey, at least we made the food heavier for you!"
I am one of the many who's got a bunch of chars that are still forced to do everything on foot.
The only way that most of my chars get access to tools and enough metal to make transportation, is through trade.
Which is fun if you have to travel through a desert to get to a mountainrange, then have three more stops to go before you get to a spot that has just the stuff you need.
There's plenty of animals along the way to kill, for those that have the skill, and at least a bone knife, but wood to prepare... so these chars are stuck with the usual supplies of raw food.
BUT... I actually like the new way, so far.
Or at least, I don't mind...
Sure, now I gotta take more trips to get what I need, with the heavier supplies, but in some cases more trips means more opportunities.
Still, the downside... by the time I get through that desert/mountainrange, I'll have to work for food first...
Oh well, I'm not actively working on getting vehicles just yet (except for one char who needs to build a ship, but he's got access to wood, just needs stone to make a hammer.)

So long as they don't keep on saying "Trade your way out of the mess you're in" Like Wolf said, your average Cantrian has no realistic oprtion but to travel on foot to trade. This was always a slow process, and allt he recent changes have slowed it down more. eg. you have to wait permission , in many places, before you gather stuff for trade (and then you might well be refuseed permission., or permitted to gather just a tiny little bit); like you can't guarantee you'll be allowed to gather food at the other end (and you never could guarantee being able to trade for it ), so you have to carry extra, to cover your jouney both ways; now the weight of all that food will be doubled, unless you have the technology to produce processed foods.
It already took years and years to earn yourself a bike so you could trade more effectively, before all these changes took place. It now looks set to take forever.
Trade is dying out , in one big town I know. People come into town looking for trade, but nobody can gather a surplus for trading anymore, so they go away disappointed.

As for me, it will make life a WHOLE LOT HARDER in the mountains. WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO??? WE HAVE TO GO TO THE PLACE DOUN THERE TO GET FOOD JUST TO LIVE!!! IT WILL TAKE A TRADING ORGANASATION TO GET FOOD UP HERE FAST ENOUGH TO LET EVERYONE LIVE!!!
Fortunatly, were building a trading organasation.

That's why you live somewhere else
I think the change makes perfect sense. Cooked food gets more work put into it, so the result of it should be better. No self-respecting army runs around with kilos upon kilos of carrots, anyway.

Okay, I'm going to say something that could be potentially silly here, but..
Two questions.
1. Could we get a list of what, exactly, the net end changes will end up being, to help us plan food requirements? Would be particularly helpful to sailors.
2. Is it going to affect Cooked/Salted/Smoked/etc meat at all, since those are 'prepared' foods?
If 2 is 'no', then we don't have that much to worry about, travellers can just switch over to meat diets instead of living off of carrots.
Most of the serious traders already do anyway - it's good stuff.

So, is planning ahead for this change a CRB? If I know I am going to take a journey that I have taken before and decide to take more food than I would have it the past? If I have unprocessed food as a reserve but normally eat cooked food. Would switching to eating the food that is going to be less usefull in the future be a CRB?

This is all very well and as you know I support the changes, but then I would like to see cooking seriously enhance the nutritional value of food. You know, so that bread actually becomes worth baking. And then also things like boiled rice, steamed carrots, etc. This is all on the cards, I hope. Ideally, it should arrive before the weight penalties become fully effective.
PS. I don't think it will be much of a breach to plan to take along a bit more food, because the PD has implied they will actually help out players whose charries get stuck starving, so....
