Hunting...

One of my chars is an expert hunter,but when he attacked a thief, it seemed my attack skill had decreased to a "skillful" hunter. What I'm trying to say is; Is hunting animals a different skill than hunting "cantrians"? :?
And I begged her give me horses
To trample down my enemy
So eager was my passion
To devour this waste of life
But she would not think of battle that
Reduces men to animals
So easy to begin
And yet impossible to end
