Are buildings on boats up yet?

Chris Johnson (2005-10-30)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the next couple of days changes will be made to how cargo weight and speed is calculated for boats .These code changes are required so that introduction of rooms/cabins/cargo holds on boats can be made possible. Most existing boats will not be affected by these changes, though about 1/3rd of boats will potentially move faster. A small handful of boats (10) will probably move slower. These boats are the ones which have buildings/rooms built upon them, one or two of these may find they are carrying too much weight to move at all. None of these changes will take place until the next time the boat undocks, they will all be able to get to their next destination. Some old building projects on boats have also been removed, with any spent resources being placed on the deck.

Is this just still being worked on, or are there some unseen requirements? None of my characters on boats can build anything, altough there is a new error message. Was this just the friendly heads up to let us know a change is comeing? That would be nice if it was.

It's a friendly heads up - In a few days the new weight calculations are coming into play .

The standard existing building types are probably not going to be allowed on boats - specialised building types will have to be designed by the Resource Department (e.g. cabins, cargo holds etc) . This is not going to happen overnight - we are just adding some of the necessary programming infrastructure before RD can start designing

So, will boats docked to other boats effect weight?...If they don't already.

They don't currently and the new weight calculations explicitly ignores them for the moment. I can't say that will always be the case but due notice will be given

It should be ignored, the other boats are certainly capable of holding up their own weight.

They certainly can carry their own weight but we are not talking about situations where the boats are just floating. The main vessel they are docked with should take into account their weight and cargo when attempting to move. the propulsion is coming from that boat.

Pirating life would effectively be destroyed though. Without the ability to dock other boats, they couldn't steal anything of value without a huge ship to carry weight.

Pirating? How about just boating in general? Build a galleon, and it's fine on it's own sailing about, but dock a long boat to it and it's just a log floating, or slower than a raft.

If docked boats have any impact on the speed of the boats they're docked to, it should be infintesimal. They float and go through the water on their own, having them docked together will add a little drag, but it won't cut the speed of a boat by even half.

I half agree, and half disagree with you. My family has a 60' yacht and a 10 or 12' dinghy. With the dinghy being towed behind us in the water, our speed can slow from 12 to 10 knots. With it actually up on deck, we go normal speed, perhaps a fraction of a knot slower. This leads me to say that there should be different ways to dock a smaller boat. You could have it dragging along behind, where it slows the bigger ship down, but is easier and takes less time to do and you can still get aboard the smaller vessel. Then there is the option to raise the smaller boat onto the deck. You could not get aboard it and it would be harder and take longer to do, but it wouldn't slow down the big ship nearly as much.
All of my endings are waiting to begin.

Yes, and a 30' one as well. But we're selling that one soon. *Mumbles* As long as dad actually goes through with it this time...

I fail to see how including docked boats in mass calculations is the end of sailing.

The intrinsic weight (or mass in this case) of an object in Cantr is the weight of the resources used to make it . A dinghy, therefore, weighs 5kg , 1/12th of a person in weight , A longboat weighs in at 10kg.

Do you think that is really going to have any noticeable effect on a Galleon which can carry up to 30 people ? Even if docked to a longboat , an empty dingy is not even going to have the speed impact , Mr Penguin589 mentions his RL yacht has when towing a dinghy .

Now if you fill that dingy with 2 people and cargo , it's going to start having some drag on a Galleon , barely noticable but some, A long boat may notice more significant drag but no one is talking about cutting speeds in half or stopping boats from docking .

Can RD play yet? Not that I'm anxiously awaiting this or anything.

Patience, Agar... as soon as the programming is ready, the work for cabins will be set in motion. :)
