Crucifixions anyone?

Postby Seeker » Fri Oct 21, 2005 9:00 am

Well, I just came up with this idea today and I thought, hell, that might be fun. This could probably be a suitable way to treat thieves.
We should be able to make crucifixes in public locations (like building buildings except you would be able to see who's on the crucifix) and be able to drag thieves up onto the Crucifix. However, to prevent people from dragging anyone up onto the crucifix it can have some sort of lock. A person with a key can drag the thief up onto the crucifix where the thief would slowly lose health until he/she either gets dragged down or dies.

-the crucifix would have a prebuilt lock.
-only one person can go into a crucifix at any given time.
-It takes 4 (or 5, you decide) people to drag the prisoner up onto the crucifix. This makes it more difficult to do therefore it would only be used in real situations.
-In the people option you can see who's in the crucifix.
-Other people can break the prisoner down if they have a crowbar.

Now you might be thinking that this is a bit unfair but it's really just like anything else in this game, already we can drag people into buildings and lock them in there to starve. This would be good for international "terrorists" or your enemies leader, you can't properly feel victorious unless your enemy is in the town square being made an example of.

No lock. The limitation of needing a big bunch of people is enough. ...And like those lamers would bother to lenghten the execution *grumbles*

This would be a slow exacution, meaning the thieves still have a chance to escape. No locks would mean they can just jump off any time they want. Or would you rather:

-the thief has to be let down off the cross by 4 people.

Both are good.

I prefer the idea of stocks, although I do have a charrie that might end up in them ;) :? Might be quite fun

It would take some wood and a bit of iron and a lock to make them, but we could have say two people to drag a theif into the stocks then we could enable people to throw things at them once a day causing damage, a bit like hitting them but you'd have to have a bit of food to throw.

1520 - 2 You throw 10g of carrots at "Thief" who tries to duck but is held fast. They get hit square in the face.

I would actually like both, one for petty thieves to be punished in and one for killing or almost killing thieves.

But one where the person can't get down unless 4 people drag him/her off, right?

A thief will usualy hit the nearest exit immediately. How on earth will you persuade a thief to come back to the town to be crucified?

I hate it - ergh

1) It imports real-life religion/imagery into the game (crucifixion has very prominent RL images around it)

2) It's a form of execution (discussed much before - http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3473) Which is something not needed in Cantr - iof you want to kill someone, starve them or get a bunch of people together to attack them. Executions can (and have) been made public events, much as they were (and are) in real life - we already have executions - no need for execution 'machines' or 'projects' of any kind -

that's hard-coding something that should be developed by characters. Add an execution project or machine and you'll see a sudden rise in 'executions - wheras it should be a function of character choice, rather than program defined possibilities.

Well, first of all, it isn't based on religion and crucifixions were an acceptable way to kill people while making an example out of them before the time of christ.

Secondly, I was only using thieves as an example. You don't have to use thieves, you could use Leaders that were imprisoned by your group if you wanted to.

And finally, this isn't exactly an exacution machine. The people in the machine would die over time, meaning that they can be taken off when the ruler thinks the person has "learnt his/her lesson" or they can be taken off by a rescue attempt. So the person in the crucifix would still have a chance.

Oh yes!!! or wild animal pits! (When animal taming is implemented)

(of course this is the wrong way round as it's chronological from top to bottom unusually)

1500 - 2 You see a man in his twenties arriving on the forest path from Karnon
1500 - 2 You see a man in his twenties fall into a pit full of wild sheep

1500 - 2 A woman in her fourties says "ok so who's going to risk going in for the wooden shield he had on him?"

*starts digging an elephant pit*

Who needs taming? Just whack them with stick every now and then to keep 'em pissed!

If you don't want execution machines, don't suggest crucifixes. They wre designed as very public long and drawn out execution machines, that was thier precise purpose.

If you want to restrain people in public, stockades or just tying people up to things has been a popular suggestion that's been to hard to code for a long time. I'd rather see ways to restrain them first.
Reality was never my strong point.

Perhaps we could have shackles and handcuffs to stop a person from fleeing a town or hitting someone instead of locking them up.

The reason I would like to see them is because if you try to give someone a trial in this game the people have to be in a locked building. If they aren't they will run away and/or hit someone.

Perhaps locking someone up with handcuffs and/or shackles could be the same way that people try to break a lock. It takes a day and may/may not be successful.

handcuffs / stocks/ chackles / etc. etc. have been suggested many times - it is a common desire to want to limit a character's movement without having to lock them up inside.

I'm not sure if ti's been accepted, or is planned - but, seeing as locking someone in a building is a very viable possibility, and all it requires is a bit of organisation (;))to get people in a building for a 'trial' - I doubt that it's high on the agenda...
