Muskets and gun powder

Postby Pirog » Wed Jul 30, 2003 7:07 am

I think that it would be good if people could construct muskets.
I don't really like the idea of running around with swords and crossbows as the marvel of weapons technology while you can build a car.

The musket would be very advanced, requiring a lot of tools...PLUS(!)...it would consume gunpowder when used.

Perhaps it could do about 40 points of damage and shields would have no or very little effect?

This would of course also require that some new resources will be put in the game...I'm no chemist but I guess gunpowder isn't a natural resource

I could be mistaken......But I think the reason why we do have only swords and sabres etc is because we wanted to steer away from all the violence...To many people were running around just killing peoples chars. If we had guns and there were little to no protection from a shield? That would really suck. Although it would be realistic...lol *shrug*

Well...there is a point to that, I must admit.

I would like to see a change in the whole combat system, where people could actually miss strikes and so on...so perhaps this suggestion could be implemented if such a change is made :)

An explosive mixture of saltpeter, sulfur and charcoal.
I just read about sulfur and all that it can do. Match sticks for one. Hey Why don't we have fire anyway? No practical purpose or something?

Well, at one time I suggested blackpowder and how to make it. But, at the time as for now, it probly has to wait for other things to be taken care of. I would expect to see it in Cantr 2.0, but not in this version...one concern I think somone raised before is that a hacker could possibly level an entire town with a blackpowder bomb...easier to just say that it will probly have to wait for now...although who knows...

Well i dug up this topic so we could continue the gun discussion... personally i'd love to see Cannons on ships (there have been cannons on ships since the 1300s IRL, very innacurate, with almost a days loading time, and the powder was made there and then.)

Just imagine the idea of a Cantr sea battle? Epic, to say the least.

Throughout RL history, empires have shown their power by seagoing vessels, and in Cantr, Pirates and other... groups... have done the same.

To build a cannon should be immensly difficult (cast iron is usually flawed, and even a small bubble in a cannon can cause an explosion)
Lots of wood, lots of Steel (the bolts and the aiming screws etc) Lots of iron!

Tools needed for loading a cannon: Spike and rammer, mop (for cooling the cannons inside, otherwise the new power could be ignited prematurely) Leather thumb cap (to put over the touch hole so the air currents created by the mop and rammer don't ignite any leftover powder)

Project Loading Cannon. Duration.... a day most probably.

I suggest that the accuracy, no matter what the skill of the gunner, should be 20% or less.

Project casting Cannonball (iron, smeting furnace, all the usual tools, anvil, peen hammer etc)

Perhaps even a new tool: Crucible.
Made out of stone, used in moulding the ball.

I do not know much about the elements of gunpowder, apart from saltpetre, and ammonia.

I couldn't find anything else, so i thought i'd better find the earliest example and add to it so i couldn't be accused to repeating projects.

But it pisses people off less than yet another topic on the same thing...

As far as I'm aware, which ain;t all that much, I thought guns were a no no, and if they ever get implemented, it certainly will not be any time soon, or within our lifetimes...
Whoever you vote for.

Guns would take away from the realism of Cantr because a shield can't block a bullet, they move too fast for you to block it. But as far as cannons go with sea to sea battles....that would be a good idea. Navies could form blockades around towns and sink any vessel leaving the town and what not.

Also, towns should be able to construct cannons to keep boats out. And a boat should be able to attack those cannons a town has but only those cannons. Not buildings or people. Also, any building project for a cannon should be able to be attackable.

That just seems like.. I dunno... that would totally destroy any chances pirates had of raiding. I don't like that plan!
