The first radios introduced can only be built in buildings. In fact the Wiki needs updating because the Medium Radio Transmitter page ( http://www.cantr.net/mwiki/index.php/Me ... ransmitter ) doesn't mention this .
There are plans for vehicle based receivers and ultimately transmitters
but at this stage we'd rather see how the existing models effect the game
before introducing other variants
Edit: Thank you to Sho for updating the Wiki

I don't particularly care about this one on a basis of logic, but I do think either a telegraph or a telephone should be invented soon, so that people can talk long distance without being overheard, at least not without some sort of side project that would have to be done, like "tap line" or something.

I can see where not having radios in cars and such isn't going to be a big problem... but I think they'd be really neat on boats. Ooh, boat to boat contact. I don't know why boat cabins haven't been made yet... I want... want want want... Okay, I just want to build a coin machine... and a radio... then I can turn all my pirate iron into pirate dubloons and play pogs, and broadcast the scores to the surrounding area.

This is a bit too vague for my liking. Could mean anything from morse code to everything that's said in the same room. Can you be more specific? I mean if it's the latter, I'd better be careful which room I build it in, hmm?
Well, to be honest, as I wrote that, I don't know how they work yet until a character of mine encounters a built one. I didn't do the programming, just the resources end of it. Jos would have to answer questions about their workings, or the classic, if outdated, find out in game.

The radio transmitter has a "use radio" button by it
When you use this you can enter a message and set the frequency that you want it broadcast on . The message is then broadcast. Every one in the same location sees you speaking , Everyone in the same location as a radio reciever within range and set to listen to the chosen frequency , hears the same message . The speaker is not identified , the message is along the lines of 'you hear a radio message "Mary had a little Lamb ..."'
Anything spoken in the same location as the radio transmitter will not be broadcast
EDIT: There are 201 unique frequencies and the range of the medium transmitter is 50 units, enough to broadcast a distance of about 1 or 2 towns away.
