I think I was there too, if you're talking about the crew of the Siom Voyager. Mistake to try to steal somebody else's boat when your own doesn't have a lock

Ha. Well, the Avenger is now in the possesion of the governmant of Blojt, but by now, my char is near Olip west. They said it was a pirate ship, so...

Yeah, stolen ships are used for pirating quite often. I have a character who has a stolen boat but thinks it's a pirate boat because he killed a pirate on it. (EDIT: unfortunately, having so many characters there over the years (12 of 15 spawned in that region this account, which I had to get fixed), I OOCly know the history behind like half of the boats there.)

Can rooms be built on ships? That could prevent items being stolen if they were locked away inside the rooms or storage containers.

Dude, one of my chars just did a completely successful boatjacking! Okay, so I was off the coast of Klojt, and I saw this ship, the MISS JENNEY II, so I docked with it.

Now that the requisite four days have passed, I'm happy to announce that by and incredible stroke of good fortune, the Miss Jenny II has returned to its rightful owners, and sweet justice paid to the miscreant who 'jacked it. Many happy dances ensued.

Even more satisfying than a boatjacking, it seems, is thwarting one and getting revenge.

yes, my char though Olip west would be safe to dock at, given he thought it was on the other side of the world from where he got the boat (and is it? im not sure...) and ya, apparently he was wrong.
