Slow vehicles?

Postby olaf » Mon Sep 26, 2005 12:05 pm

I have been waiting for 3-4 days to see if somebody else noticed this/brought it up, but it seems to me that vehicles I am on/know about have only been going at walking pace for the last week or so.

So anybody agree/disagree?

I'd disagree :D the speed depends on the type of vehicle, the weight it is carrying and the road type.

Personally in the last 3-4 days at least one of my chars has experienced vehicle travel much faster than walking speeds (8 to 10 times walking speed - this is an estimate)

My char is travelling alone on a tandem bike, recently purchased.

Of course, the upgradeness of the road is a factor, but let's just look at his travelling record:

Before the bike (repeated often as he is a trader):
1271-3: Left AAA
1273-6: Arrived BBB
2.3 days with close to a full load.

Also repeated often with similar results:
1280-1: Left CCC
1283-1: Arrived BBB
3 days with 6-7kg load.

He bought a tandem bike in AAA, left with around 14kg of load
1291-1: Left AAA
1292-3: Arrived BBB
Woohoo! 1.2 days! (Note: this is still nowhere near the 10x speed I seem to read in the wiki, but yeah)

1292-3: Left BBB
1293-1: Arrived DDD
0.6 days! Never been here before, but seems quick...

While in DDD, ate a bit of food, and added 1245g to load, so possibly a _slight_ increase....

1297-6: Left DDD
1299-5: Arrived BBB

Ay? Almost 2 days?

Now he's travelling from BBB to CCC, still on the bike, still with around 15kg of load. Took 3 days without a vehicle albeit with a smaller load... Has been going for 2 days and is just over 2/3 of the way...

This is only an example, because it's my best documented, but another charrie is on a walking-pace rescue mission on a tandem bike...

If it's not a bug, then maybe there's a _very_ sharp and sudden speed drop above a certain point on a tandem bike?

It's difficult to comment exactly without knowing the locations and the road types. If you wish to send the details to bugs@cantr.net or PM me I can look into this further if you want.

Out of curiosity, does cantr take into account slopes? So if going from BBB to DDD is downhill then it would take less time, but if going from DDD to BBB is uphill (from lowland to highland) then maybe it takes more time???

From my understanding, no. But there may be a difference for types of terrains (i.e. slower in mountains), though I doubt it.

I had a person travelling on foot who ended up swimming through the better part of a sea.

It was a long journey, almost two weeks to complete it. It's a tough route when you have to swim.

Ok, thanks Chris. I may log it as a (potential) bug, but I guess I'm not sure what intended behaviour is...

If a tandem bike handles up to 75kg at top speed and then suddenly drops to slightly above walking pace, then fine - we could have just that.

If it's meant to be a gravefully degrading function - then I'm not too sure.

Maybe with the other charrie I have on a tandem bike (as a passenger) - the driver seems concerned at the speed, but maybe he hasn't had a passenger before and it's all just a coincidence...

I don't quite know how to put this...

The reason my charrie has been travelling at walking speed since leaving the place is that he seems to have ... uh... walked.

He's obviously having absentmindedness issues, and now has to walk back two towns to go and get his bike, which I was just about to log a bug for, as it had completely disappeared when I arrived!!! :o

Time to go and sit in a corner for a while...

Your not the first person to leave a vehicle behind. You may be the first person to post about it in the forum, but who knows...

Oh, I've done that before too. And I think I mentoined it in the "I AM..." topic.
But that's not the funny part. If you don't get it, I can't explain it.
