Lost Gift -Ediquette question

Postby Doug R. » Fri Sep 16, 2005 6:13 pm

A coworker of my wife Fedex'd a baby shower gift to my wife's office. The gift made it to the shower, but being in a plain box, was never given to my wife and subsequently disappeared.

What should she do?

If she tells her, we're afraid the sender will feel compelled to repurchase what was probably a pricey gift (knowing this particular person), which we really wouldn't want her to do. On the other hand, my wife will appear rude for not aknowledging the gift. If she pretends she got the gift and sends a generalized thank-you, but the sender finds out it was really lost, then that makes my wife look bad too. I ask here, because there is a fairly equitable population of ladies here ;-)

I would tell her that the gift wasn't recieved and explain why. If you're wife's friend wants to repurchase the gift you should let her. Remember, it is never bad to give.

I wouldn't recommend lying or withholding the truth in order to avoid having your wife's friend do something she would likely want to do.

There is no profit for anyone if you make that decision.

If it is a financial burden for your friend to repurchase the gift and she still buys the gift because of her care for you she'll be blessed even more from the giving. If she doesn't repurchase the gift for one reason or another at least you'll have been honest with her and not worried about it every time she comes over to the house.

That's my 2 cents worth.
