Breaking down doors

Postby Savanik » Thu Sep 15, 2005 10:48 am

In one of the previous threads, it was suggested that buildings have 'hit points' much like ordinary people and be allowed to be attacked and damaged. While this is possible, it seems quite easy to make more ways through locked doors through ordinary projects.

I, for one, would like to see more ways through locked doors.

1. Bashed in with sledgehammer
2. Chopped through with axe/battleaxe
3. Taken off hinges with screwdriver (Sorry, Jos!)
4. Kicked down with foot (only works well with crappy interior doors, really, but it's a thought)
5. Chisel and Hammer on the lock
6. Drilling out lock (the way locksmiths do it)

And for the purely spurious:

7. Melted with herbal organic acid (yay, herbs!)
8. Burned through with thermite (aluminum+powdered hematite, magnesium igniter)
9. Blown up with gunpowder
10. Broken down with body of newspawn
11. Set fire to

Any other suggestions? :)

If these were to be implemented, a proper jail cell would have to come first.

So we have to kill every newspawn thief who found 100g small bones on the ground?
Again, a jail cell will have to come first.

The way that I would implement that is to make a couple new varieties of locks.

Keeping in mind that a lock is only as strong as the door it's attached to, I would make several varieties of 'locks':

Wood door and lock (wood and iron)
Reinforced door and lock (wood and more iron - a wood door with iron bands around it and such)
Jail door (lotsa iron)

Reinforced doors would be harder to break down than your regular doors, and jail doors could well be impossible without tools.

Maybe you could even throw in a Stone Door and lock, for wood-poor areas, but that's just a side thought.

I like this idea, however you need to make a door that is impervious to tools, or make it so that you can take someone's items, otherwise people will just walk right out of jail, nick is right on this one.

Don't we have that problem right now? If someone has a crowbar, how do you lock them up?

The thing about crowbars is that they are expensive in steel and hard to get ahold of. Therefore, most people won't be able to get out most likely and definitely not a newspawn. Plus, it takes a lot of tries before a crowbar even breaks a lock sometimes.

Not that many chars are gonna have a crowbar. That's probably one of the most prized possessions a char can boast of having, if they have one.

And you can lock up a person with crowbar, just have yourself a helper, drag the crowbar person out of jail and back again to end the lock picking project and beat the crap out of him. Soon he would realize that if he doesn't stop and drop the crowbar, he'll be dead. Simple.

But if you were planning on killing him regardless... that won't do much.

So basically, my suggestion is at least no worse than current things with regards to people with crowbars. :) Either kill 'em or convince them to drop them.

There's a difference. Very few characters have crowbars, and those that do are either established citizens, who will not need to be locked up, or out-and-out criminals or established enemies, who are usually killed on sight anyway. Prisons hold mostly young characters, held for newspawn theft or breaking the lesser laws. Usually the town does not plan to kill them. Making it possible for these young characters to break out would be a major change, and in my opinion not a good one.

My intention here isn't make it a 'get out of jail free' card or anything, just make 'regular' doors easier to break through. The idea that doors to your Happy Home(tm) are just as hard to get through as jail doors is what gets me.

Jail doors might cost a bit more to create, but.. well.. they're mostly made out of iron, eh? :)
