Something is broken. My boats moved four times in just a few minutes the last time I was able to look.

Do you think some people are able to get on or is it effectively locked because no one can access it anyway?

No, some players are on.

And I believe it is boat data that is overloading the server... hence everything is so slow.

Jos, are you aware of the terrible lag problems probably due to the multiple boat moves at every turn?

I finally got logged in and Jos has it locked..

"Apologies for the game lock ... the site is extremely slow at the moment and I am so far unable to explain why. As long as this is the case, the game will be locked."

It's open again ... can't explain the sailing stuff yet, though.

Why is Cantr so slow now? I can't even get on at all half the time lately.

It's especially bad around this time of the day which is when I really need to be playing...but I can't!

That's why we have those stats at the bottom of the page now - to find out why ;)

Remember when the old server got horribly slow? Seemed to me that by far the biggest contributing factor to that was when“tiredness” got added to the hourly updates (ironically!). Any other complexifying stuff been added recently? The worst period seems to start around Cantrian lunchtime. Coincidence?

Anyway, here’s an idea; What if you change it so that tiredness only gets added when you fight? Since the idea of tiredness basically seems to be to slow down fighting, the other tiredness updates seem redundant now, and they presumably still put a strain on the server. Doesn’t fix the current problem, I know, but it might give a lot more leeway and ameliorate the other effects.

I noticed it is very slow from yesterday. Yesterday at late evening of Polish time Cantr was so slow, that login in taked many minutes, and minutes ran out too fast  Today at the morning of Polish time it was much better, but now it happens again...

EDIT: At now it is ok ;) I hope that it will stay like that rest of the day ;)

The time measurements that we have show that our code is at some places incredibly inefficient. That needs correction. This doesn't mean removing functionality, just optimizing the code.

Also, the problems with our previous server were not really our fault, actually. There we had a so-called 'virtual server', which means that from our perspective it looked like a server, but in fact we were sharing the computer with others. After we moved Cantr to our current server I tried that website again and it was still so slow (!) - in other words, it was the other users on our server, not us, that slowed things down. I felt a bit cheated with that, but alas, what can you do ... Now we have a fully dedicated server and donations that well cover this more expensive option, so things are going well. Now we can grow Cantr so that we'll need more than one server ;) ...

But in any case, slowness is due to inefficient code, not functions. One thing takes really a lot of resources - the fact that our site is available in several languages - but this ability is highly valued and will thus not just be removed.

I actually got a 'too many requests' failure just a few minutes ago, and the game was barely moving.
