Well, as I always say...with a bad change there is always room to work around it and adapt. Although I don't like the idea of ships docking to other docked ships there is a way that your stuff won't get stolen by idiot newspawns. Since it is possible for others to dock onto your boat regardless and this has happened to me several times I decided to have smaller locked boats docked to my boat. All my things are inside so anyone who docks while I am sleeping is just wasting there time if they don't plan on killing me. Most newspawns don't have crowbars so that is good.

If it is made to where you can jump onto a docked boat large or small if locked then it would ruin this adaption that I have made for myself forcing me to find another which currently I have no time for. I beg of the Gods and all those who love making my life harder :P not to do this. I mean...if you did oh well, I'll get over it, but I would like to just add my begging here for the record. :D

How about this... only the person with the appropriate key can undock a boat from land?

I am not worried about people thieving resources... I am worried about someone thieving my raker... :(

Yes, but think about it Surly. Most people who would do that is newspawns and they wouldn't get very far with a locked ship without a crowbar. ;) As for a boat getting stolen by a pirate, well yeah...that scares me too, but hey...stuff happens... :twisted:

Edit: By the way, I like your idea. If this was possible it would solve alot. :)

A newspawn should not be able to steal a locked ship, especially one docked in a harbour. That is ludicrous... it is likely you won't even realise the boat is gone for a long while, because you cannot see unless you are in the harbour.

This is penalising large ships again... and there is plenty of that already. This is needless as well, and as much as you try to justify it, stupid things like this drive players away, not draw them in. And Cantr needs players dedicated enough to earn or build big ships... not having them quit over stubborness to reverse a stupid change.

Justifying is what I do. :P Although I have yet to find a way to adjust to that except for my Pirate characters going on a rampage!! Muwhahahahaha!! :twisted:

I agree with Surly wholeheartedly. I don't have any characters with boats, but all the same, it really is pretty stupid.

Make it stop, please. Why are you making it so easy for pirates now?

First they can dock and plunder and kill and no one can get on their boat to continue attacking them after they undock. And now anybody who can scrape together a dinghy can steal entire boats that should be in safe harbor.

Let me list the imbalances against the owners of a larger Ship (defined as dockable and boardable by smaller boats):

1. Those on ship cannot see the identities of any boats which are not dockable, therefore they cannot identify whether a nearing vessel is friend or foe.

2. Ship can be docked by smaller pirate vessel if vessel gets close enough on water, or if Ship is not moving at all, for instance docked at a harbor.

3. Ship can be boarded regardless of lock, but if docked pirate vessel is locked, it cannot be boarded from Ship. (therefore pirates can travel back and forth between boats at their leisure, Ship's crew cannot)

4. Cabins and lockable containers cannot be built on Ships, therefore all resources are vulnerable to theft unless being carried by crew members, or kept in another locked smaller boat.

5. Smaller docked pirate vessel can remain docked to ship for as long as it takes for them to load up everything from the ship.

6. In some circumstances, with current warping bug, the pirate vessel is transported out of sight and area as soon as it undocks, making pursuit impossible. This can also be the case for any smaller pursuit vessel, undocking from offended ship to pursue pirates.

7. Even if the above warping action does not take place, smaller boats...such as dinghys cannot be boarded by any other boat, so retaliation is nearly impossible.

Understand that the above is true regardless of the size of crew.... and often regardless of the alertness of said crew. Ever try to grab a thief as he quickly goes in and out of buildings? Or intervene before he picks items up off the ground?

I am trying to describe this in detail because, in spite of the numerous posts and threads on the subject, others still seem unaware of the magnitude of this imbalance. (See http://www.cantr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6115) I am also posting this in response to the "unconfirmed" status of the lock issue on Flyspray. Trust me. This is confirmed.

Anyway... if I missed anything, please feel free to correct me. :wink:

Don't forget that large boats can only dock in harbours... and therefore if the ships owner goes into town to trade, he cannot see his ship being stolen.

Not to mention the fact that a sloop with several storage dinghys is cheaper, faster and bigger than all the large ships but the raker... despite only needed 200g of iron - barely enough to cover the cost of a lock, if we didn't have the ludicrous free lock situation.

This would not happen. Warping does not work like this.

Now that it's been admitted that the ability to dock to a ship in port was in fact an unintended programming glitch, it will be great when the GAC puts The Miss Jenny II back in Klojt where it belongs.

I'm awakening this thread for a similar question.

I have a character (who for some incredibly strange and stupid reason is) in a dinghy (not knowing anything about boating) trying to dock with either of two longboats. All the time I try to dock for something like 2 Cantr hours before seeing the message "<my ship> stops docking because the target is moving." just as if I wouldn't have seen that hours ago, if that was the case. I've tried it several times now with two ships out on open water, that doesn't move visibly on the map.

Before my troubles started we (another character and I)I docked one of the longboats with a dinghy and then I left alone on another dinghy to go back to the first longboat, so it was dockable at that time, only I didn't do it.

My char is currently bobbing around at sea without any means of contacting either of the two ships or dock to them. Is it supposed to be like this or am I missing something?
