I hve a character who is expert at manufacturing iron shields. She can make one in exactly three days instead of the advertised four. I know a character who's awkward at making them, and it looks like taking him roundabout six days to complete the project he's working on, and no he's definitely not wounded or hungry.

Conclusion: the average time required to make an iron shield.is 4.5 days, not 4. Or are the skills skewed such that bad is badder than good is good? Or does tireness make THAT much difference?

The average may still be four. Your awkward character may be at the low end of the bell curve, while your expert may be at the low end of the expert level. To say it more simply....your expert may still not be making it as fast as possible, which is skewing your statistical analysis just enough to be off from 4 days.

Can someone please tell me how you see these skills? I haven't got a clue... I thought it was shown when you try to do things, like hunting or manufacturing things...

I don't really like the skills because you can't really roleplay how well your char does things, I think all these "upgrades" are destroying our game, and we need to stop it before our game is completely gone!
Why not just leave the game as it is: The Best MMORPG Online? I see Cantr heading in the wrong direction.

...and less Role playing...

Cantr is and should remain a game of ROLE PLAY...thats what hooked me to it in the first place...adding and changing things in Cantr is accepted and expected..but when the changes affect my ability to role play my charrie the way I want to...it dampens my interest. Some recent changes I see as good...and I recall a thread long ago of people asking for skills...(I think I did anyways) But I feel this change has had the worst impact on my charries, and places significant limits on my abilities.

Cantr is a society simulator, don't forget that. Not an RPG.

And how do you simulate a society without people? Aren't The charries what makes a society?

Definition of society:
noun: an extended social group having a distinctive cultural and economic organization

Definitions of social:
adjective: relating to human society and its members

noun: a party of people assembled to promote sociability and communal activity

I was born a short, blue eyed, Canadian. I had no bearing over this choice.

If you can pick your physical attributes, it seems more like the character creation process of a hard numbers RPG.

If you're working on a project, click on the tiny green button by your charries name at the top, this will lead you to the character description page for that charrie. You can look at the skills of others in the same way.

I agree with Sunni, Doug and the many others. I enjoy Role Playing - pure role playing, no strings attached.

Skills seem like a string to me - tieing me down to a game mechanism that determines how my character is. I like Cantr because of the freedom it gives those that play it. I feel like skills takes away some of that freedom.

I want any new character I make to be able to decide themselves what they want to do, rather than be limited because other characters can see that they're not any good at what they'd like to do.

So far I've avoided any such situation - and I hope it stays that way. I hope that skill levels can stay as an interest to those who are interested, but can be mostly ignored by those who wish to ignore them.

As for the fighting skill - I know that fighting alone is unlikely to heavily increase fighting skill, and it relies on other things. But, knowing that practice is at least one factor, it plays into the hands of those who enjoy repetitively doing the same thing to increase 'levels' like so many RPGs out there - that lure is there, and people will be lured to that. Which makes me wince when I think about that in Cantr.

Roleplaying and society simulation are close but not equivalent. Society simulation is the combination of roleplayed personae and a realistic framework for those personae to interact in. Without the roleplaying, you have a hack-and-slash RPG; without the framework, you have a roleplaying chat room.

Skills are not meant to make Cantr into an RPG, to destroy roleplay. They are meant to make the framework stronger, by increasing the incentive for characters to differentiate themselves. (Note the distinction from the purpose of skills in an RPG, where the intent is to cause players to differentiate their characters.)

I had a point to make from this. Perhaps I'll make it some other time. Maybe someone else can figure out where my train of thought went.

as a society simulator - this moves makes sense

but from a role playing perspective - this move seems to suck...
big time

many players are attracted to Cantr because of the roleplay, and, whilst I'm in no position to say how Cantr should progress - I'd like not to see its largest strong point (for people like me at least) be diluted

I just can't figure out why people feel like skills limit their role-playing. Some older chars had to find ways to explain their sudden inability to do well what they had been doing for many years (and even this is a fabulous rp opportunity) but there is no reason why you can't rp your skills.

It seems that people are just bummed because they can't follow the exact plans they had for a char even befor the char was created. A player plans for a char who is a great warrior but turns out his hitting skill sucks. So now you have a char who wants to be, or thinks he is, a great warrior but he isn't. What's not to rp about that? The many harsh realities and circumstances of Cantr life have always thwarted the best laid plans of player and character.

I have one charrie who's an awkward baker. It just adds to the labor cost of the bread and raises the price.

I'm happy to RP around the new skills. I've RPed happily around other changes in Cantr.

This change just gives me a feeling of freedom being taken away and given to game mechanics - and it's a feeling I don't like
