Cantr Climates

Postby A Neo Irony » Wed Aug 24, 2005 4:44 pm

One of my characters was asked a question about tempature lately, which got me to thinking... what would the climates be like in the different parts of Cantr? I think I've figured it out, atleast as best as I can without knowing where the poles are and even if Cantr is round. According to a boat map found on the continent with Siom whose author I can't remember, the other continent can be reached by going north. So already this makes the Siom continent south of the one I like to call Andarune after the fantastic map done by Andaru Treefeather.

Anyway, the next thing I noticed were the placement of the desert areas. In Andarune, the Pok Deserts are more towards the south, while on the Siom Continent the Kiii deserts are almost at the northern most point. So I'd have to say the equator of Cantr (or atleast of the english section) runs through the strip of ocean dividing the two continents, making Tirqui the coldest place on the southern continent and Plakeur the coldest on Andarune. Of course I have no idea where K-Isle fits into all this because I haven't a clue where it is in relation to the other two.

So, what do you think? Does anything I just said sound plausable?

To be sure: please don't start making up your own climates, as it will eventually contradict the weather system we're implementing (in progress for four years already ;) ...). When thinking about a weather system, I was also thinking about climates, though, and it's virtually impossible to draw a reasonable line that confirms all existing area types in their climate ;) ... E.g. not all deserts will be on the equator, but they should at least not be too far off, and some other lands that might seem less warm will inevitably be on the same line.

Bring it! I can't wait for weather! That will so great!

I have had similar thoughts on conversation about certain places, wether it is warm or cool, etc. based on resources and such. I think it will help add a lot more uniform flavor to the game. It should certainly alleiviate conflicting comments about hot and cold in a location anyway! :D

Sring-Sri Island was an interesting place. In some regions, the people made clothes out of reeds, such as reed hats and reed skirts which gave me an vision of a tropical island... then the picture of Nraam was that of a snow covered mountains with mountain goats living there, which brought on visions of the Alps.

There are deserts which don't have hot spells, similar to the mongolian stepp land.

I think those are mostly wild grass, if I'm not mistaken, allowing for mobile horse movement.

New Zealand has a desert, and we are very close to the South Pole.

The South Pole itself is a desert.

Canadian Tundra is a desert, and quite far from the equator.
A desert is defined by the ammount of precipitation.
If it's too cold, moisture can't evaporate and therefore can't precipitate.
