We don't really even begin specializing until College. But it really depends from state to state. And you still need to take everything even in your first year or two of college.
America believes in the whole well rounded education. Now for someone who excells in history and English that really screwed me because I didn't too well in the sciences, maths, and foreign language. I believe that everyone should learn the basics but by the time you're through Middle School (or Junior High for others) one has learned all the basics for the most part. I have yet to use trig or find a purpose to know why and how frogs do the nasty.

Agreed!
Seconded!
Just because you're older, smarter, stronger, more talented... doesn't mean you're BETTER.

You haven't had to use trig? Savages. I find that I use trig almost every day for calculating angles and vectors. It is true that US schools (at least public schools, I can't speak for private schools, but I believe they are the same) don't allow you to specialize until college (where you still have to take a rounded set of classes for the first year). College and grad school are where you learn specialized skills.
