I am not sure that the argument he makes has any validity... no more coal is actually required in the long run, as the amounts of raw resources required is still the same. It just takes 1 day to smelt 7 days worth of iron, as it were.
Everyone seems to have missed this point. You still need the same amount of raw resources to make your iron, you just smelt quicker. Unless you plan on making much more iron now, this doesn;t change anything.

Surly is correct, and I'm sure West is as well.
We increased all values by 7. So, the amount you get back is 7 times more, but you also have to apply 7 times more resources. Essentially, seeing as how you can type in how much Iron you want, you could put in the old value of iron production and make that much, you'd just get it after an hour or two, rather than a full day.

To increase the production of raw resources new tools and machines should be introduced. We are discussing them in the resources department, but have not come to any conclusions yet.
