Thought I'd check the bbc before believing this story, but it looks real enough. A bloody good discovery and congratulations should go out to the astronomers.

You know, in our holly book (Qur'an) God says that in our solar system, there are 11 planets, not 9... So now we discovered one more, which means we know that they're 10.. One more to go.

I'm not making this up, I swear..

Technically an 11th and 12th planet have already been discovered. And perhaps many more too. Depending on what you call a planet that is. Planet is becoming more of a cultural term, not scientific. Also, the Quran didn't say in the solar system.

BTW here's a link if anyone's interested http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/n ... 40315.html

I did a bit more reading on it.

They found 3 large bodies in the Kuiper belt which are being touted as planets. Especially the largest because it is large then Pluto.

But the orbits of these things make Plutos look practically normal, and frankly if it didn't have a twin body, I don't think Pluto would have been classed as more than a large asteroid itself.

But for now, yey for 10/12 planets.

They think there's alot larger stuff out in the Kuiper belt, just so hard to see any of it that we're just now finding it. There's still something big enough out there to cause variations in Neptunes orbit we haven't yet. New theories are indicating that the early solar system was very chaotic and that there may be other planets past Pluto that were thrown out by Jupiter and Saturn's gavitational pull. We'll see one day.

In 2011 there will be a luanch of a new Satilite Telescope named "The James Webb Space Telescope" which is rather like the Hubble only Infrared...
It's suppose to be more or less a replacement for the Hubble Telescope as it's nearing 20 years old. In fact, it'll be 21yrs old in 2011.
It was first launched in 1990 but only really started taking pictures in 1994 due to a few optical errors.
This Telescope should be very usefull in discovering planets with a heated core much like ours. Possibly one with life? More than likely...
As not all life has to be "Intelligent". Maybe a planet with no animals but only plant matter... Very exciting if you ask me. :P

"When Joseph said unto his father: O my father! Lo! I saw in a dream eleven planets (Kawakib) and the sun and the moon, I saw them prostrating themselves unto me."

Surah Yusuf Surah 12 Ayah 4

Khunnas, kawakib, tariq (not taraiq), shams, qamar and najm, are the Quranic words for heavenly or celestial bodies. The Khunnas are like planets, but other than these they appear and disappear in alternating phases, the kawakib are the orbiting planets, najm is a star, tariq a very bright night-or morning-star, in fact a planet, like Venus. Shams is the sun and qamar the moon.

Show me where it says solar system there Dee?

Well okay you obviously know more than what I thought you knew..

It doesn't say the solar system but that's what it's meant by it... 11 planets in the solar system plus the sun and the moon.

Don't argue please, I am not in the mood for it!
