Alright, it's a fact of life that sometimes you don't want to be recognised in certain situations; I don't see why this would be any differnent in cantr... A character could do something (ie manufacture an item, or whatever) to disguise your appearance, resulting in players only seeing "a man/woman in their twenties/thirties/whatever", rather than any custom name they've entered for you...
Lots of creative ways of implementing it and making it very dynamic...
Disguise?

Nope, too many fields involved.
See, the way I am guessing it works (armchair progeammer) is that your character has an array, a list, of the character id's that you've named, and the string you've named them. To have disguses function to allow the character you've named to be unrecognisable, all the dynamic names would have to check:
First, that you've named that character id
Second, wether or not that character is wearing any of a list of items that are "disguises"
Then, to be able to dynamicly name that masked man, your character will have another array of character ids wearing {disguise item}, littering the cantr database with another pile of data.
Don't forget, now you can have interesting conflicts. One item that could disguse a person is the stylish knit ski mask, and another could be the already in game cotton longcoat. You legitimatly acquire a longcoat in one town, then wander off. In the next town, you see a old man fall dead and riches litter the ground. You step out of town, don your longcoat, turn round and re-enter town to pillage, snatching the keys to a jeep and a ski mask off the corpse. Making good your getaway, you zip away several towns, then don your ill gotten ski mask and take off your longcoat, and travel to a neighbor of the old mans town. You pillage that town as well, but now in ski mask. Not content to leave well enough alone, you run off towards your home town, wearing ski mask and longcoat to plunder there.
Now, some people know you "naked", some know you with ski mask, some with longcoat, and now some with both. But what happens when someone who knows you naked and with longcoat sees you with longcoat and ski mask? Another array for combinations? Mix in a bandana ... and/or a hooded cloak.
All sorts of data clogging up the server.
Then add in sillyness.
2345-6 You see Clark (mild mannered guard) {wearing glasses} enter Gaurd shack.
2345-7 You see a man in his twenties {newspawn looking for work} enter Guard shack.
{inside Clark sabers the newspawn and then drags him to a jail cell and tells him he's locking him up for attacking the town. then Clark enters the main room of the gaurd shack and takes off his glasses}
2345-7 You see a man in his twenties enter, coming from the Gaurd shack.
2345-7 You see a man in his twenties ineefectivly hit everyone in town and enter all the buildings before returning to the gaurd shack.
{Clark stashes the stolen goods in his office, dons his glasses}
2345-7 You see Clark enter, comeing from the gaurd shack.
2345-7 Clark says " That man attacked me, I sabered him and dragged him to jail, did he do anything while I was inside?"
...
He can get away with that too, as long as no one knows him naked or he turns thirty ...
Yes, disguses would be neat, one or two of my characters could use them right now, however, I don't think it's something that's right for cantr right now.

That "no" is just my opinion. I have no actual idea how it is or could be programmed, so that's up to people who do know what's going on. Which is why I highlighted that I was guessing.
I try to keep my critisism constructive and not just say "U suxors". Like I'd said at the end, I like this idea, and would use this idea, I just don't think this idea is currently feasible. Things may change, someone may have a better way of doing it than my guess, so it may indeed become possible at a later date.
Seko, not allowing the disguised persons kind of defeats the purpose. Clark Kent/Superman, Zorro, the Green Hornet, Spider man, there's a long list of characters that thier disguise is much more well known than their alter ego. Part of the point of a disguse it to allow you to do something that will attract attention, good or bad.
Setting players or characters egos aside, can you imagine the chaos that could be caused by three people that can't be named wearing ski masks piling off a boat and pilliging a town? It would be near to impossible to even know if there were three people or twenty people, even if you were online and awake at the time, as they are all darting about dodging attacks. You would only be able to count the number of people you could hit, so would only possibly know there was at least three people, if you were lucky.
Disguises need to be able to be dynamically named. You can recognise the same masked man, but you might not recognise the masked man with no mask on.

It doesn't stop here...thingnumber2 wrote:people are still suggesting this?
wow...
*sighs*
and I disagree - disguises take a lot of hard work in RL - especially if someone knows you - glasses and a tach don't work... A full face mask still wouldnl't work - you'd have to change all clothes along with it - and, anyways, who says cantrians recognise each other by sight? maybe they all stink?
Whoever you vote for.
