Skills have not been around forever, they're a fairly recent addition, and IMHO Cantr was much more unique and less "game-like" without them.

And Ovault, my advice is to take the time to proofread your posts, and at least make sure to use the search function to do you homework first before making statements about things you're not sure of. Otherwise it's hard to take you seriously.

I wish you guys were around before the skills were introduced ... any idea how much discussion there was on the mailinglists and later forums that skills definitely should be implemented?

I remember a good deal of discussion on how they shouldn't be as well...

There are some obvious reasons that skills are bad for cantr. They can prevent a character from attempting to do what they're meant to want to (which has some good in it, but is hard on players), and they can drag cantr towards the pit of leveling MMORPGs.

There are some decent reasons that skills can be good for cantr, too. Hopefully, they balance out.

Skills - can be okay
Combat skills - this is the area where Cantr risks losing its uniqueness.

What about two-characters projects? Does only starter's skill is in charge? If it is true:
- (alone) A collects 320 wood in 1 day, B collects 250 wood in 1 day,
- (together, A starts project) A+B collects 320*2=640 wood in 1 day (twice as faster, so could be repeated twice).

So cooperation rules.

My guess would be that each contributes according to their ability, just like a single-user project...

Yea, that would be most realistic approach, but it is hardest to implement, so I think it is as I wrote in previous post.

Oh, to be sure: skills increments from fighting or hunting is now double as fast as it was a few days ago. Since I had the impression training went too slow.

Does that include degrediation? Provided there is degredation. It's been rumored before that skills can get worse if you don't use them. If that's true, everyone's characters are getting bad twice as fast with the skills they don't use now. By the time anyone gets a saber, they'll all be horrible with them, while the people who have been awkward with them will still have had some opprotunity to practice.

I hope there is nothing that makes skills you never use get worse, because it will only result in everyone being horrible at what they do.

Please, please tell me my characters can't get worse? :(

It's a funny thing character history doesn't affect at all. I got a girl who's never touched a weapon in her life, in fact she hates them and I noticed she's an expert in making shields - according to the wiki, making shields is a part of weaponcraft. While one of my tailors is awkward in tailoring, I'm explaining it so that his fingers are too fat to do any accurate work, but then again he's expert at digging and farming though he's avoided all physical activities for years. It would have been nice that before skills started to show, the game would have recorded what these characters have spent their time doing and the skills would reflect the experience, rather than being totally random.

I have a quesiton...are newspawns novice (or akward, whichever is lowest) in everything? That would make sense, and they would develop skills as they did things, up to a predetermined, random maximum (like genetics, sort of).
I think, therefore I think I am, I think

No, skills are completely random, no matte what the age of the character is. I have some that are skillful and expert, while I've seen older characters that are awkward.

Seko, I have a similar thing. My incredibly-gentle-to-all-animals character is an expert hunter, but everything else he does daily (burying and digging, mostly) is novice or awkward. Lame.

I have also just noticed that "Gardening" doesn't seem to be implemented yet?
