Building project question.

Postby julie2 » Thu Jul 28, 2005 8:20 am

I posted this question under "discussion" on the appropriate page of the Wiki, but nobody nobody noticed it there. I could really do with an answer before I proceed any further with the current the current building project.
it's not clear if building a "room" actually increases the available space wthin the building? I mean, say a building holds 100 units, does that mean that the the addition of the room will increase te bilding's total capacity to 200 units, or will you only be ablew to store , say, 50 units in the main building, pluse 50 units in the room (subdividing any other way you like so long as it totals 100.). The wording of the article suggests the latter is the case. However, it would semm that an extension really does inctrease the available spce- again to judge by the wording of the article.

Can this be clarified, please?

Also, can a stone Hall be built inside a standard building? Experimentation says it can be, but would doing that decrease the capacity of the hall to the size of the building it's built inside? ? I particularly want to know this as I've designed (and started to build) a building which will comprise a stone hall with various additions including an entrance hall. The mechanics denmanded that the entrance hall (normal size building ) had to be built first, but now I'm beginnin to wonder if this is really going to work the way it's meant to Any chance of an answer really fast?

If you build a room, it is truely an *extension* of the original size of that type of room. E.g. if one 'building' can hold 50 people, and you add another 'building' as room, of the same type, then you end up with a building with two rooms, each of which can hold 50 people.

It's like this:

Code: Select all

Building first:

+---+
|   |
|   |
+- -+

and after extending:

+---+---+
|       |
|   |   |
+- -+---+

I noticed it, I just didn't see how the page could be clarified anymore than it was.

Jos did state, it's clearly an "extension".

It doesn't make the existing room larger, it just adds a room to the room you're in.

Thankks very much, Jos. And Anthony. That does mke it clearer.

Here's what it says under buildings/ rooms

This building is a freestanding building when build within a town's main area. However, this same building may be built inside others, and then it is considered a room within the bigger building (Hope that's not confusing!). This could be useful, for example, so that different areas can be locked and kept private.

It doesn't actually say that the room extends the available space. In fact the wording I've highlighted can bre taken to imply that it doesn't extend the available space, but simply divides it up. (which doesn't really make a lot of sense from a strictly mechanical point of view, but hey! We all know that Cantr has it's own peculiar laws of physics).

The entry on extensions is clear on that point, but the presumption is that what's said of extensions only applies to extensions, and not to other structures. The very fact that it was written there, but not under buildings/rooms increased my doubt as to whether it equally applied to rooms.

I'm not the only one to be confused. Some characrter in-game expressed doubts about the building design, for much the same reasons. They said it wouldn't work because you surely can'tbuild a stone hall inside a
smaller building. I know you can, but that set me to wondering about whether it would work the way I thought it should.
